Oil temps @ 90 degrees is OK, no?

Featured Replies

Had a "long" blat on the way home golf today after a Golf annoyed me by driving like a t1t.... Had some good empty M5 action of "a fair bit" mph - then shot up Telegraph Hill torquay bound at around 110 (km/h, honest). Anyone who knows this hill will know it's about half a mile long, and climbs at roughly 1:10 or more. :D

Well, I came off at the top of the hill to head for home, which is when I noticed the oil had reached 90 degrees in the sump (highest I've seen yet) - coolant was at roughly 85 (normal) The oil pretty quickly cooled back down to it's usual operating (sump) temp of around 77/78 degC, and the coolant did the same.

Is 90 degrees OK, and it's just showing the oil is doing it's job of getting round the engine nicely when it's on a good run?

the operating temperature range of the oil depends on the grade/viscosity..

if you arereally worried you could fit an air-to-oil cooler radiator, like the ones that mocal do

Our Ibiza has an oil temp gauge as standard and Seat have seen fit to put the 'red line' at 120*C so I wouldn't worry about 90*C. Most high performance petrol engine's run at around 110*C when being worked.

This thread reminds me I really should get round to sorting some gauges.

I believe the MOT smoke test required the oil to be at least 80 degrees so i don't think 90 is too bad

Depends where your oil temp sensor is. You get better (higher, more variable) readings from ones tapped into oil galleries in the block.

ISTR your's may be in the sump. I reckon 90 degrees is nothing to a modern oil. If you got it to over 110, maybe that's getting closer to the edge.

90 is fine... it used to run up to 110 degrees in my old fiat uno turbo (I used mobil1) and it was always fine.... (went into the red at 120 in the uno..)

Yep I agree with the above. The oil temp in my 406 diesel was normally around 90.

My vr6 used to go up to 130oC before I fitted a BFO mocal and wrapped the 6 branch, never saw above 110oC after that....so yeah 90oC is perfectly acceptable.

90's nothing. South of 150 is normal & south of 200 it'll still be fine.

Yep, 90 degc is fine.
