Gearbox oil

Featured Replies

In an effort to get a slightly better gearchange (particularily going up 1st to 2nd:thumbdwn: ) I thought I'd change the gearbox oil on my 4x4. 3 questions - whats recommended, how easy is it, and how much do I need? I have got a ramp I can use if needed. Thank you in advance.

Don't know if the 1.8T is the same as the TDI but on the TDI it is 2 litres of 75w-90.

There have been reports of some cars not liking the super syn 5 oil, and myself i used Millers fully synthetic TRX to good effect.

On the TDi you undo a single drain bolt (IRRC it is hex or splined depending on the car) then drain the oil out, do the bolt back up and then top it up with 2L.

You need to have the car on level ground when filling up and obviously need to get under the car.

I would also recommend a foot or two length of clear hose to put on a spout to help you get the new oil in, and that you undo the filler nut before you drain just in case it won't budge, so that you don't leave a box without oil.

2.4 litres of 75W-90 (synthetic). Skoda (VAG) G50 oil meets that spec.

The transfer box has a seperate oil drain to the gearbox but they share the same oil hence the 4x4 using a little more to fill.

Drain both out and refill. Run the box up through the gears and recheck the level as it will fill the transfer box from the gearbox and will drop the level a bit.

Thanks for all your help
