Brake wind back tool

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Anyone in Central Scotland area have a brake wind back tool I could borrow?

Im planning on changing the discs and pads on all four corners and read that I need a tool for the rear.........

Also, is there a guide - I dont have a Haynes manual and not sure how difficult a job this would be without a guide. I have never really worked on a car but im reasonable competent with tools, etc.

cheers

I made my own tool up. The trick is to apply lots of pressure, rather than rotation..... I used a g-clamp around the back to provide my pressure, and then it slipped in nice and easy

(I should point out that pressure seemed to be the key point, but rotation (clockwise) was also needed)

Gosh those Yanks know how to be enthusiastic about something, don't they :D

I never bother splitting the caliper personally, just undo the big bolts and slide it off the edge of the disc. The front piston will usually slide back under finger pressure, or a gentle levering with a screwdriver against the front of the caliper. Would recommend the tool for the rears over messing about with pliers etc.

If it is stiff to push back then open the bleed nipple a bit as you push back, but don't let any air in, make sure you close the nipple before taking off the pressure and it will be OK.

This also stops any crap from the piston ( perished seals etc ) going back up the brake pipe.
