vrs rear brake disc ridge (in middle of disc)

Featured Replies

hi briskodians (first post)

have searched but not found info on prob below on forum so far....

i am enjoying point and squirt motoring having bought an 05 plate 24k VRS in march) and have now done a couple of k. A big improvement on my 03 90bhp tdi Octavia estate...:).

however it seems when i bought the car i missed the fact that the rear offside brake disc has a ridge - smoothed but maybe 1mm high 1mm wide. its a circle right in the middle of the disc. maybe caused by a previous pad problem? . i suspect this ridge has cut a groove in the middle of the pad by now. other discs look ok but for some outer edge corrosion. no squeals under braking as yet. i suspect this ridge will reduce braking force avail (ok at back so not as bad as if at front)

rear pads look pretty new (7? or 8?mm depth)

your recommendations?

- change one disc?

- change both rear discs?

- change pad(s) at same time or get away with keeping same pad(s)?

thanks for your input b4 i go to dealer

unless you're having any braking problems, I really wouldn't worry about it..... my rear discs lasted 80k, with a pad change at 40k.......

it may wear your pad sooner, but you'll notice as soon as it starts grinding ;)

and welcome to briskoda....

Welcome to Briskoda.

As above.

Oh! never change just one disc.

:iagree:

I have the same occurance on my '06 vRS. I have noticed it from new - Quite distictive ridges across the centre of both rear disks.

I had an opportunity to compare them with my brother's and my dad's '04 vRSes at the same time about three weeks ago and they showed no signs of the same. Checked mine and they had gone!

Checked again last week and they where back - I think they just no getting enough use - the day I compared with the other cars I had just thrashed the car down country lanes which could explain the lack of ridges.

My brakes are excellent and are not grindy so I'm not worried; I'll just keep and eye on it...

Badly ridged discs can fail an MoT, but I gather it's got to be something pretty dire! Some places offer disc skimming, which might solve the problem in a one-er. Even if you have to get new pads, this might work out cheaper than a completely new set of discs and pads. You'd need both discs done for reasons hinted at above...

But unless the ridge is around the outside or inside edge of the disc, I'd go along with the suggestions that it's just a lack-of-use issue. A couple of runs out in the country may well see you right!

If you replace the pads, the pads will follow the contors on the discs and continue to wear the same anyways, so no point in that, unless the pads are low.

yep , don't worry about it , my rear pads have 45k on them , and are at the same sort of thickness as yours
