1.8T 4x4 gearbox issue

Featured Replies

my mate has had his car in at a "garage" today to check his gearbox.

basically he finds it hard to select certain gears,i said it could possibly be the selection cables.

the "garage" has said that they cannot find a problem and that he should either go to skoda or a specialist(the latter i said from the off). anyway before he spends a fortune on it just to find out what it could be,has anyone had an issue with the 1.8T 4x4 box?car has covered 70+k,the clutch he says, doesn't slip,he can select gears smoothly when the car is not running.

i have had a searchy searchy ,but nothing seems to tie in with the symptoms above.

if it is cable related, anyone got an idea on price a dealership/specialist would charge to repair?iirc from my old SEATs they weren't cheap.

but thinking about it if it works fine when sat with the engine off, would this be down to slack cables?

thanks in advance.

either selectors or clutch master cylinder i'd say.

if not does he want to give me the gearbox? i have a lsight issue with mine.

Sounds more like worn syncro to me

If he can select gears without it running then it cant be adjustment,

Either a fault with a clutch or as mentioned syncros.

i'll give ya

cheers guys, either way its box out time for him then?

any sure fire way of pinpointing it or will they need the box out to find the fault?

take it to someone that knows first to get it looked at as it might be something simple.

sourced a VAG specialist in shrewsbury,he's popping in tomorow to have a chat.

think i might pop in with him,he's not that mechanically minded.

cheers guys

Before he starts spending it may be an idea to change the gearbox oil.

Worked wonders for me....

Worked wonders for me....

how much oil is in the box?and what sort.seems the most cost effective start point.failing that ,back to the expensive ides.cheers:thumbup:

Mine was lack of snchro and worn teeth on 2 and 3

Mine was lack of snchro and worn teeth on 2 and 3

Was that attributed to normal wear and tear, or a fault with the gearbox?

Chris

On that mileage, if it's not just occasional blocking of reverse and missing 3rd (like my long shift throw, short arm, high clutch issue with 3rd on fast upshifts), then oil change (ISTR 3l of 75W90EP synthetic needed [well 2.7l, but you can't buy 700ml bottles of gear oil]) first. If that fails I suspect it's box out time.

how much oil is in the box?and what sort.
2.4 litres of 75W/90 Synthetic.
