Anyone fit Car kits for a living? How can I get into it?

Featured Replies

Been installing a few car kits for folks, and wondering if any pro's can advise how one goes about getting properly qualified to do it full time.

Not really a job I've ever seen advertised - and I have been looking for a while!

I would imagine it's a pretty competitive market.

i fit these kits for a living, and the main problem is not just fitting them, its stocking them and supplying them at a competetive price. ie who can compete with halfords when they offer free fiting on all car kits.

I will fit them for family and friends, but have to admit I'm not keen on the Octy II at the moment due to the whole canbus thing. One of those things you have to look into.

You can source the kits on the net for a lot less than halfords and I have a shop local to me which will sell me the kits at the same price as the net + delivery.

This is advantageous to me as I can just give them a call and pop along knowing it will be there which is nice. :)

I would agree with people though that there isn't a lot of space as most places will do it for not that much.

I've found that either places charge lots for the kit, and do cheap free install (but you've paid it in over inflated prices anyways), or nice cheap kits then another

I've had company cars since mobiles came out, and I have to say that in around 6 or 7 different cars not one of them has had the phone kit installed correctly.

These were by different companies in different areas of the country. All the fitters seem to put the brackets in the wrong place and just leave boxes and cables all over the place behind the dash.

Some of them are just left sat on top of the lower trim pieces. :thumbdwn:

However, this is no doubt down the having to do so many in a day and get the volume needed for the price they offer.

There should be a market for somebody to come along and do a propper job. Take time and charge accordingly. But the general public do not care about the quality of the fitting and neatness. All they want is cheap and working.

For that reason I'd look into something else ;)

There are not any direct qualifications for car kits. There is manufacturer accredited training but it's not much more than dealing with the products and independantly you would have to pay for this.

We ask for City and Guilds 224 which is a bit old but is now equivilent to Electrical and Electronic Servicing 1687 NVQ 2,3. I'd start here

Or here

Whereabouts are you based? Ever considered repairing mobile phones?

Excellent, thanks.

I'm in Staines at the mo, moving to Northants soon. Not considered mobile phone repair - why'd you ask? Is it something worth doing?

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have a car-kit question, a VERY long shot, but here goes!

SWMBO has just bought a 2004 Nissan X-Trail. It has a nokia car kit fitted (the big cradle type with a cradle that looks like this:

http://www.blueunplugged.com/xsdbimgs/NokiaCARK91blue.jpg

However, this is for an older series of Nokia models and her current phone ( a Nokia 6233) doesn't fit it :-(

I have found on the internet however a nokia adapter (and third party ones) that just plug into the 'controller box thingy" (!!!!) and convert it to a bluetooth type one.

Only problem is, I can't for the life of me find the control box!!!

I know it's a hard question as you didn't fit the kit originally, but do you have ANY ideas as to where it could be?!!!

Or any other solutions like a cradle "adapter" of some sort??????
