gear problem

Featured Replies

can anyone help with this 1, just bought Octavia 04, 44k miles

when stationary i find difficulty getting into 1st gear, when the car is moving slightly there is no problems.

foxy.

My wife's Fabia does this sometimes. Originally thought it might be the synchromesh, but 1st (and reverse) aren't meshed IIRC  I think some connector or other can be adjusted to make it better, but as it's only intermittent on my wife's car, she's not getting it done 'til it's in for service. When it happens, she puts it into 2nd, and then it goes into 1st with no problems. (This is without letting the clutch up, BTW)

thanks for the quick reply, i had mentioned to a mech guy who actually mentioned that a linkage can be adjusted. Phew, i thought i might have been looking at large bill.......thanks, foxy

Foxy, it sounds like a linkage adjustment to me too (if it's only first gear). The other possibility would be slight clutch drag, which would suggest either that the (hydraulic) clutch needed bleeding, or that one of the cylinders was starting to fail.

Apogee, I don't think anyone's made a road car without synchromesh on first gear since the 1960s!

Oh. Must just be reverse, then! :o

Double declutch should be a quick temp solve for this. I have to dip the clutch again to select reverse.

thanks Bro

Try an oil change, on FWD 1.9TDI it is 2L of 75W-90 fully synth gearbox oil.

I used Millers TRX Fully Synthetic but the VAG stuff is pretty much the same price too.
