Fix for Vista slow file saves/transfers

Featured Replies

I stumbled across what seems to be a temporary fix for the slow saves -

One of the main complain I had about Vista is the slow file copy or move operations. It seems that it is the new "Remote Differential Compression" who is the culprit.

To turn it off go in Control Panel / Programs and features / Turn on or turn off Windows features and uncheck "Remote Differential Compression"

My fix was to reinstall XP. Vista does my head in!

My fix was to lie down in a darkened room !

I actually quite like it.

I actually quite like it.

:iagree:

i quite like vista...:)

Seems you have to disable quite a bit of the 'stuff' Vista comes with to make it anything like - this was the verdict from a friend of mine also. Basically, he said, once you've turned off all the fancy / CPU consuming stuff you end up back at XP.

BTW

Thought I'd read somewhere recently that Vista is due to be supplanted after some 18 months - anyone else heard this ?

Shades of Millenium ....

I like it too - but it does nothing new for me and stuff I can do easily in XP crashes my PC - so it's back to XP at least until SP1 comes out.

A la Office 2007

i.e. have to relearn locations / naming for everything for very little gain (and slower opening of files).

Marketing gimmicks for the 'must haves' - fortunately, have now opted out of this expensive game

ive got a better fix.

Buy a dual core PC and you shouldnt have any probs. I dont experience any slowness with saves or transfers on mine.

Funnily enuff - though not directed at me - just have on eBay today. But still don't intend sticking Vister on it :thumbdwn:

The only time ppl have probs with vista is when they put it on XP computers. If a comp comes with vista as standard then you should be fine.

I'll take your word for it, shortly.

i.e. will stick with XP which is, on the whole, tremendously stable (from someone who's been through 98, Millenium, 2000, XP various).

Some mainstream progs still not Vista compatible apparently

Just install ALL the updates, after all thats all SP1 is going to contain. Also its important, just as in the early days of XP to keep your drivers updated. Not from the pc/hardware makers website but from the manufacturers website. Eg. for ALL NVidia graphics / motherboard drivers go to nvidia.com , for intel goto intel.com and so on.

I have been using vista since RC1 and have it installed on all my computers, an expensive change but its defo worth it. Have yet to find something that doesnt work right.

Well if you get one like mine you wont have a prob :P

Seriously tho did you match the ram to the motherboard? Are all your ram modules the same speed? If not the faster of the two will slow itself down to match the slow modules speed. Or if your motherboard doesnt support the speed again it will slow the ram down to the fastest speed it can handle.

The spec of mine is

Core 2 Duo 2.0ghz (so effectively 4.0ghz)

2GB DDR2 667MhZ Ram (on 2 1GB Modules)

Having said all that what speed is your Hard drive as the ram really doesnt make a difference if your hard drive Read/Write/Access speed is slow If your hard drive Speed is less than 5400RPM that will probably be where your problem lies.

Any other probs give us a PM im a bit of a geek with computers

Im a tight **** though

Get open office and it's free :P

Seriously though, none of the corporates around our place are even contemplating touching it with a bargepole for a long time. I even hear talk of just skipping vista as a whole if they can or a move to Linux . The last bit kind of shocked me as there is no way the IT people in question would do that unless they really had to as they usually love all things windows.

Yeah M$ seem to have done an excellent job of turning people away from windows with this release. Scary stuff.

I've changed from Outlook to Thunderbird for emai because I'm using IMAP and Outlook's IMAP support is poor.

I also took Office 2007 off and went back to 2003 because for the few times I use it, the new interface really annoyed me.
