Dragon box owners

Featured Replies

I fitted a mrHoots dragon box a few months back and i am happy with the extra kick that it provides but the downside seems to be the copius amount of smoke that the car now seems to spew out behind it.

Any fellow briskoda owners with a dragon box fitted?

How much extra smoke does your car produce?

A times when cold and i boot the car,it looks like im a land version of the red arrows

The black smoke is unburnt fuel. The box is dumping extra fuel in to provide you with more power and it isn't all burning properly (This is the downside to running a box as opposed to a full remap which will also give you more boost and therfore better airflow as well as fuel flow).

You may clear some of the smoking up with a better air filter and possibly a pd160 pipe to allow a little better airflow in giving it a chance to burn a bit more of the juice. Also look at cetane boosters such as Millers PS4 which improve the fuel's "burnability"

what setting are you running the box on? may just need to lower it a bit.

A can of nitrous oxide will clear up the smoke. :D

(but I personally think the box is just overfuelling the engine too much)

fitted mine yesterday , didn't notice any extra smoke when testing it , as has been said above maybe the settings need knocking down (standard setting is 11) or you need a new air filter and the intake pipe (PD160)

i had the same prob with a cheap one from ebay smoked like mad so took it off in the end

i had one fitted one to my furby. not much smoke at all and i had it set on the highest setting! is it an analogue one or a digital? digital one is a load better.

I've been using one on max setting for two years on my 1.9tdi - no smoking problems, and still very good mpg overall

that might not of been a Dragon tuning box , that probably was just the resistor in a box which fools the PCM into thinking it is cold , therefore throws more fuel in

Thanks for the replys

Ive got a pd160 air take on the car but my filter is probably rammed with dirt due to it being the origional one that is 16 months old now,ill try a new filter(dont fancy the green or k and n due to the arsing about cleaning them)

The dragon box ive got doesnt seem to have any way of changing the settings

Did you not get an instruction leaflet with it ?

the end cover, away from the wiring ,on the box needs to be removed to access the setting pins

If you can't be arsed then you had better learn to live with the smoke. The intake will be pretty much defunct without a better filter.

At least it makes people in soft tops keep a decent distance behind me

Go for a Green panel mate.

Get some bio in it, I've found even being used as low as a 5% ratio it give a much more efficient/cleaner burn, more power, economy and much less smoke.

It's a waste of money. You will never see that 3-4ppl difference, you might as well be using Snake Oil.

Put regular in it and spend the difference on Millers PS4 and a green filter.

Yeah

I think i will opt for a green filter,it was just the oiling and the reported tight fit that was putting me off buying one

the Green filter is by no means a tight fit , if anything it is a very poor, loose fit , i've stretched mine so that it seals between top and bottom of the air box

is the millers ok to put in the car?

Ive heard that the pd injectors dont like extras added to the fuel

Officially no and you should never put any additives in you PD

Read some of the threads about it. Plenty of them on the forum ;)

Not sure you can back that up fella. We did a number of benchmark tests on my Furby with Dragon box and the ultimate made quite a significant difference, both on performance & smoke. Ambient temp was pretty much identical & the car was not serviced or modified in between the runs.

You've got to run it for a good couple of tankfuls to see any change though...
