Is anything tricky or is it just straight forward changing the oil yourself (in my garage)?

Bit of engine flush, warm oil..then jack it up undo s/plug, remove filter..let jack off to drain properly.

Jack up again refit s/plug (with new washer) and filter…

Is it that easy or is the filter etc.a b@st@rd to get too?

Do filter from above and do it before draining the oil. Dont use motor flush it strips the injectors and valve train or lubricant.

Dont use flush its a waste of time & money.

Make sure that the oil is warm - before draining it.

I always tend to let it drain out over night.

When you replace the filter make sure you put oil into it (otherwise on first start it will be metal on metal for a very short period of time while the filter fills up.

Change the sump plug washer as they will leak if you reuse the old one (no matter how tight you tighten it & dont over tighten it or you'll need to rethread ...which is a pain).

The other thing is if you have a garden shed use the waste oil and paint the shed it will look dark in colour but the wood will not rot and its very waterproof.

Steer clear of that last advice, as unlike other ways of treating wood, waste oil won't ever dry to the touch, so it's a recipe for chemical irritant contact dermatitis; not to mention that it's harmful by ingestion and inhalation, should you have children or animals who might lick the wood or put their hands / paws in their mouths after touching the shed; or should you stay in the shed for any amount of time on a hot day. Engine oil's not that far removed from creosote on the big scale of things, and that's been banned in the UK for non-professional use, don't forget. It really isn't worth it, when you can get a similar amount of proper wood treatment for a tenner or so...

Try pouring the old oil over tight corners. Sit, have a nice cool beer and watch motorcyclists fall off!!:thumbup:

That's a bit of a sledgehammer statement. It depends what you want to use it in. For SOHC Vauxhalls with the hydralic lifters I would say it was nearly vital that you do use one. For an A series using a flush just makes the block/head/rocker cover/whole bloody thing leak oil. For a PD I wouldn't because it can strip a few vital bits of the right lube.

My Grandfather used to do this until it was established used engine oil (Especially diesel oil) is carcinogenic. He recently had to have his cancerous kidney removed. Not saying it was the oil but I thought I needed to highlight this as being some of the worst advice I have ever seen given on a forum anywhere.

Well this is what my dad has done since I was very young so I just followed the same path, we have over 4 acres of land and I have to say over the year the oil does dry to touch but it is always tacky, also in the summer there is always a nice aroma of oil in the shed.

Having said that thanks for the info about the health issues - I will no longer be doing this.

Note Ive been using creosote every year up to last summer and still have a large barrel full of it.

Tip for the OP.

Don't over tighten the sump plug as IIRC the sump is aluminium and you will strip the thread if you do requiring a new sump.

Sure somebody can tell you the correct Torque too but I don't know if off the top of my head.

Autodata CDE2 quotes 30Nm tightening torque for the sump oil drain plug.

I completely agree that the original comment whether taken seriously or not was in very bad bad taste indeed and was quite obviously written by someone who has never witnessed the consequences of a serious motorcycle accident due to oil spillage ! :mad:

I'm a little worried by the comments regarding replacing the sump plug.

My Dad and I did a DIY oil change at the weekend and didn't buy a new plug... does that mean i'm leaking oil?

look at your drive in the morning also on the weekend get under the car and have a close look at the sump plug you'll soon see if its leaking.

If you're worried about disturbing the sump plug get one of these:

you won't get any oil on the floor if the Fabia has an untray fitted , unless its really p1ss1ng out obviously
