Looking at a BMW 1 series, even optioned up the 120d can be had for 21k in top trim and the 118d for less.

I don't see the logic in paying almost the same money for an octy, which is a shame as when the car is going it is fantastic.

If you don't need the load space a 1 series is ideal and I too am going to take a look at the Merc dealer for a c class shortly.
