the VAG 1.6 TD engines, specifically the 80bhp ones? I am looking at a Jetta TD at the weekend to use as a daily runner to work. Mileage is ok at 109k but I was just wondering if anyone knew much about them and what to look for.

Any help will be erm, helpful.

Had a 90 reg Jetta TD Sport - think it had around 90 BHP (IIRC it had a larger intercooler - or had an intercooler and the 80BHP models didn't - and other specced up bits). Ran it from 15k to 110k until it was written off by an uninsured driver - a sad day. Loved it to bits, went like stink, engine absolutely fine still at 110k (but am stickler for servicing).

As long as it has seen regular oil changes you should be fine , in fact , I'd be more worried about bodywork on an old Jetta than the engine , especially a diesel one.
