POP! Cloud! Splutter! - what was that?

Featured Replies

Had a 'moment' yesterday, it was just after first time I gave my new (5k miles) Fabia vRS a little bit of welly, I was half a mile down the lane after the 'pushing quite hard' bit, when this happened:

1. I Lifted off for a curve, then accelerated again, gently.

2. Straight away I heard a huge POP!

3. Saw a dense black smoke cloud issued from the car, out the back or from underneath I couldn't tell. It caught my eye in all 3 mirrors though, and I was looking ahead! I thought that thing from Lost was coming to get me.

4. Drove very gently to my destination (300yrds away) in 2nd at 2000rpm because it was spluttering and missing really badly, felt like the power was going to die any time.

5. Saw much blueish smoke out the back as I pulled up.

The RAC (dedicated Skoda patrol none the less!) came in 30 minutes, and fixed it in 40 minutes, I was glad because I thought it was like a new engine job or something.

OK, so... what was it? Answers right here, postcards not accepted, or text your answer to... no here's fine.

Andy.

im going for turbo boost hose

Air hose popped off intercooler / similar

Edit: Darn - beaten again :D

Well done!

It came off right at the turbo.

RAC guy said it was never fitted right at the factory, maybe the fitter got called away for a cup of tea at that moment!

Somehow reassuring since he's sure it 'shouldn't' happen again, and it's caused no damage.

Is this a common thing? Do you think it can 'go' again?

Andy.

Very common thing.

Could be?

The wiring loom on my Fabia was fitted badly where it passes through the bulkhead.

Bad fitter from CZ probably

It happens from time to time, more so with the remapped / modified cars as they have turbos running with higher boost levels so pressure is greater.

The couplings on the turbo hoses are crap at best tbh.

Mad thing is, my last one I had for 2 years, (and wasn't totally standard) but it never missed a beat, not once!

Nor did it 'benefit' from EuroV features like misfiring around 1800 RPM !!

Nope, that's for sure :D , just gets a pain when I'm in 'grannny' mode which I do quite a bit round town and such. It also sometimes gives a right old lurch if the gear change puts you bang on 1800 and you're not going hard.

Andy.
