Cold start differences

Hullo

Kind of thought I'd see if anyone could explain this one...

My old TDI was always a sterling starter in the morning - The coil light would be on for about a second and it started up really nicely every time. The new one however sometimes has the coil light come on for up to 3 seconds and its a lot more lumpy on start and once it's going it's very grumbley for the first 5 seconds then all is fine.

Is it possible for two identical cars to have these kinds of differences in starting? I suspect if I'd never had the 2 1/2 years of easy starting with the car I managed to destroy, I wouldn't notice the way this one starts when cold, but there you go!

Not had any problems in my car and starts the same way your old one did. I occasionally on a really cold morning have to wait but not very often.

Maybe before you got the car it was started when the glowplugs were on too often? VW's Polo had a system which prevented you from turning the key when the glowplugs were on.

Of course Toytals new D4-D engine (as used in the Yaris and Mini) doesn't have glowplugs at all!

Mine's at 54k and starts straight away with no grumbling at all. :D
