Just a quick question? My farther has a Volvo S40 diesel.

We were thinking of getting the car chipped or mapped to get more then 95 horses out from under the bonnet. But the main reason being fuel economy.

The question is which is best for price, economy and performance.

Also where to go.

Thanks in advance.

I remember a company offering maps by RICA being linked with Volvo.

I had a Volvo V40 Diesel for nigh on three years which turned out to be one of the worst cars I've had the misfortune to own :thumbdwn: . My advice would be to sell it and buy a VAG car with the PD130 or PD140 and map that, far more entertaining :P

I too understand RICA to be big on the Volvo scene.

Nah, stick with Volvo and get one with the D5 ;) Far more entertaining and mappable :P

Re-maps don't make the economy better btw, despite what you may read it's the old line from Mad Max, ....speeds just a question of money, how fast do you wanna go, what they do offer though is better power output and driveability, but they will throw the dash computer out by about 5 mpg.

..........but they will throw the dash computer out by about 5 mpg.

Do you have any proof to back up that wild claim?

they will throw the dash computer out by about 5 mpg.

I don't think this is the case with remaps as the ECU knows how much fuel is being injected, unlike a tuning box or piggyback ECU where the fuel pump is fooled into putting more fuel in than the ECU is telling it to inject....

Well, kinda, I read posts that users have had re-maps and then claim the computer is showing 70 mpg after a good old urban thrashing.

Just see it this way, more speed = more fuel, like drinking a pint, thirstier you are the sooner you order another, same principle.

Granted. I see your point!

But I think the theory is that a re-map will give the car more torque, thus not having to thrash the car to get anywhere.

That's true enough, but performance always cost's, many of the Vx lads I know who've had maps report the computer loses it's accuracy, can't comment really for VAG Skoda but i'd imagine the same applies, funny thing I noticed in my car, my sat nav and cab meter are spot on for MPH but the car speedo is reading 3 mph more than these two, and the meter was set on a measured mile.

But for a given speed, the added torque of a remap will mean you can potentially use a higher (more fuel efficient) gear. As you say though, if you spend your life booting it, then obviously mpg will be down, but this should be reflected by the trip computer as it knows how much fuel is being injected at any one time.

Are the VX guys having their cars remapped, or chipped?

Some are chipping, most re-map though, but a lot of them say when they fill up the comp says one thing and the receipt says another, we even have one clown who reports his 1.9 CDTi as doing 70 mpg, which is about 15 mpg over what the most reasonable best conditions driving can achieve tbh.

iirc chipping with those bypass plug things just makes the car run on choke by fooling the ecu to think the engine is cold, mapping is way better, that way everything gets told to haul up it's shorts so to speak.:D
