runaway is basically when the engine runs on its own , usually on its own engine oil after turbo failure , the engine will rev uncontrollably(sp) , turning the ignition off and even disconnecting the battery will not stop it , the only way it can be stopped is by stalling the engine , in gear, foot on brake hard and let the clutch out , and hope the engine isn't U/S afterwards

In a runaway situation, the best I think you can do is clog the air intake with something substantial. Stall it through lack of oxygen.

but you risk having the item sucked into the engine causing more damage , plus you don't want to get you hands anywhere near the intake because there is one hell of a suck on a runaway engine ;)

In that case I would use my..... large blanket. :D

Only ever had one experiance of a runaway engine and that was when the bloke next door put way too much oil in his golf mk2 1.6td. It was sat on the hard shoulder of the M1 reving its nuts off and clouds of whitesmoke everywhere. It ran for a good five mins and then went bang!

i thought the engine running on its own oil was pretty much unheard of? i'll be sure to carry a 'large blanket' with me wherever i drive just in case...

Had a 1300 astra that did this. I built it out of scrap and the engine had been stood for 2 years meaing the valve seals had gone and it needed topping up quite a lot with good old 20/50 :). Put too much in and it would shoot up through the breather pipe and down through the Varijet and WHOOOSSSHHH! An instant smoke screen that was capbable of covering all 3 lanes of the M4 and should have had MI5 on the phone asking me for the schematics.

I loved that car :D
