Power company supply cables

Featured Replies

I was checking out some of the wiring in my aunts house today and didn't really like the look of the consumer units earth connection. It ends up as a thin piece of black wire attached to the sheath of the supply cable.

Everything else is in good order - modern meter, consumer unit and main switch as fitted by Scottish Power.

BUT - the cable gland for the supply cable is branded "CVEPC". The stands for "Clyde Valley Electrical Power Company". Which ceased to exist after nationalisation in 1947 :eek::eek:

So the cable is at least 60 years old, and may be as old as the house - which was built in 1925.

Am I right in thinking that, if the cable needs replaced, it's the responsibility of Scottish Power?

I am going to get the earthing checked out for her anyway.

I think they are only responsible for the cable up to the meter. Obviously they will carry out the repair but they may want to charge you for it.

what is the size of the cable??

Hard to tell - it's coverered with pitch and I didn't want to poke it too much. But put it this way - a lot smaller than the cable coming in to my flat :o:O

you's be surprised how small a cable you can get away with.

most domestic premsis will have a 100A cut out fitted to the main incoming supply cable. the outside diameter of that cable(which would most likely be solid rather than multiple strands) could be as small as 20mm
