Newby info required please, cam belt and odd noise

Featured Replies

 Hi

just found the forum which looks to be a fantastic resource . just bought a 2004 octavia estate (1.9 TDI Elegance) with 51,000 on clock. service schedule says 80,000 for cam belt change but i have read some info on forum that says this was revised to 60,000. Is this so? I wouldnt want to miss the belt change and have it go bang.

Also when cold there is a strange noise that comes from the engine then disappears when warm. It could be described a rhythmic hiss that lasts about half sec then goes for half sec. I have 1.5 months warranty left and am thinking that this may be something that I need to sort out. Is this a common prob, any ideas appreciated.

thanks

peter

I can't remember the exact mileage, but the cambelt on mine (52 reg) was done somewhere in the mid 50 thousands, round about 3 years old.

No idea about your hissing sound though, so I'd raise it. That way you're still covered even if it breaks after the warranty period ends.

from 53 plate onwards belt are now at 80k not 60k. they've now got kevlar belts.

Mine makes the same hissing sound when the engines cold - I reckon it's the drive belts meself. Usually, if a noise disappears when the engine's warmed up then I don't worry about it.

I've got a hissing noise on a cold engine too, when the turbo's going on-off. I figure that it's the turbo or standard "dump valve".

I thought the 80k came in due to the PD130... but i am not sure.

Personally since it is inspect at 40k then change at 60/80k I would do it at 60k as
