'Rolling' car pics

Featured Replies

Any advice on setup for these? I'd be using my 350D. Best camera setting - speed etc? Anyone done some successfully? Would be nice to see examples...

For example, some E38 stylee ;)

to keep the wheels spinning youd be best to put it on shutter priority (Tv) and take the image at 1/320th or less. Obviously the less you have the more shake youll get on the car which is where you want it sharp. not sure on the car speed, probably best to just have a go at various speeds. i havent done any moving car pics but ive got panning pics from outlton. the other thing youll have to watch is vibration from the car your being driven in so it could get a bit tricky without a giroscope :D

The other extreme option is to make a rig to attach to the underside of the car being pictured. Attach the camera to the rig. Put the aperture on smallest (f22 on aperture priority) to get a slow shutter speed of a couple of seconds (use ND filters to drop the shutter speed if there is still too much light) Leave the engine off, find a deserted road or car parka and get someone to push the car out of shot while you trip the shutter either remotely or on timer. When you develop the photos clone out the rig in photoshop or angle the composition so you dont get the rig in frame

heres some paaning shots from standing.

I took the majority of these from a standing position. http://www.briskoda.net/forums/photography-photoshop/goodwood-festival-speed-2007-friday/82907/

My photographist friend advised me to be in manual focus i.e. prefocused on one spot, turn off anti-shake as it would see panning as camera shake and compensate and wind the shutter speed down to less than 1/60th.

Its not easy.

In your case if the cars are at the same speed and distance then it becomes slightly more straightforward as focus will not change so just wind down the shutter speed and turn off anti shake.

It seems strange buying an expensive camera with lots of toys to create the perfect picture but it works.

Good luck.

PS. I am in no way an expert on these matters.

Thanks guys. I'll do some digging about.

Re the motorsport pics - I've had not bad results before with this sort of shot, so that's set me thinking about using some of the settings I used for those. I just presumed there might be a different approach to it, as the camera will also be moving in this case. But that makes sense, will just have to compensate for shake really.

Hardest thing will be finding an appropriate bit of road, I imagine!

Cheers,

Steve

Ive done it with my 350D.

All i did was set it to manual focus, Shutter Priority (around 1/120 or slower) and just real of loads and loads of shots

Know it might sound obvious but the slower your driving the slower the shutter speed your going to need to compensate.

p.s this isnt inspired by a certain detailing world tread is it? :D

you could always just take a picture of the car standing still , and then use Photoshop to make everything blurred except the car body.

I took a fantastic image of a friend on the M4 in the days before Digital cameras, quite possibly my best picture ever, only for him to go and lose it :(

Can't help with tips though as it was just a spur of the moment picture.

It always something I've wanted of my own car though :)

I like the Lupo in the petrol station

Just thought - is that James' site - jamlip - who used to be on here sometimes - had a Fab Elegance in black? :rubchin:

I know he was a photographer by trade, did work for PVW magazine and stuff....

Yeah, that's right - it just 'clicked' when I was writing that earlier post....

Steve

yes that's him, and yes... that's his Porsche!

good stuff there too

I would agree with that.

Yup, he bought ScoobyChris's old Fabia. I bought something off him, or sold him something, can't think what though offhand and have met him. He showed me some of his work, really really good.
