Hmm, does seem a bit early - perhaps you can persuade them its a warranty problem?

if the disks look ok to you, then chances are they are ok. When I had my Boxster the disks and pads ploy was a common way of the dealer making some extra money. This was confirmed when I had the Boxster service and was advised the disks/pads needed changing, however an independant inspection later revealed nothing wrong.

How/why would the rear discs be corroded? If they were worn or warped then I could understand it. The rear discs do rust where they meet the wheel but that's merely cosmetic and does not warrant replacing the discs. There should be loads of meat on the discs and pads at that mileage.

The rears discs on my previous car were fine and that was at more or less 40,000 miles.

You should ask for the old ones so you can see the corrosion for yourself.

Discs at 18000 and 16 months must be a warranty job if needed at all. They always look "rusty" if not driven for a day or two anyway.

And tyres at 3mm ? I thought the limit was 1.6mm. But of course they wouldn't have a lot more mileage in them.

leave the discs..

as for the tyres.. most brands drop off in performance below 4mm..

in winter i would change.. in summer i would leave them for another mm.....

My Bora had the front disks changed at approx. 50k miles because they were rusty - the rust had gotten in through the vents and started to corrode from the inside.

The edges of the rear disks are also rusty (non-vented), but are still going strong after 65k miles.

Has anyone else had a problem with rear disks. Any suggestions.

John

My suggestion: Use a different dealer for your next service, this one is trying to rip you off.:thumbdwn:

BS.

I have never heard that discs would have been too rusty. Atleast not in a car

thats less than 2 years old. I live in a country, where rust attack every vehicle

and every part, and never have i changed brake discs because of rust.

Believe me, they do gather rust, but they wont be unusable before they are too

thin or the grooves are too deep on the surface. If they are not warped and rust

bothers you, you can use steel brush to brush the rust on the edge, but there is

no way that it would have gathered that much rust in few years, not even in

Finland.

Here is a pic from mk4 forum, and these were only cleaned to use again.
