Tyre life

Featured Replies

What sort of life can I expect from my tyres? I know it is very subjective, but rough ideas would be helpful.

I've currently done about 10,000 miles in my Octavia RS, and the front tyres have about 4mm of tread left - although the majority of my driving is on B roads and country lanes, I thought they would last a little longer.

After 30k miles I've had tyre changes at 13k (front) and 27k (front and rear).

Although, tyre changes are less of "distress" purchase for me and possibly other RS owners.

Hope that helps.

I have now done 31k on the original tyres, although they do now need replacing (still legal at the moment) I am hoping to get one last ring trip out of them.

220 miles on mine and going strong :D

He he! I get bulk discount! :D

My first set were dead at 25,000, but that was over the winter with only 1 track day. Since then I have had, in order:

1 complete set of 205/50 Conti Sportcontact 2

1 complete set 225/45 Conti Sportcontact 2

1 complete set 225/45 P Zero Nero

1 set front 225/45 P Zero Nero

1 complete set 225/45 Conti Sportcontact 2, which are almost dead

Also have a 1/2 worn complete set of Yokohama AVS sports on my spare wheels.

In the garage I have 4 brand new P Zero Neros, 4 brand new P Zero Corsas and 4 brand new Kumho Ecsta V700s.

Why do people think I have a rubber fetish?

:D

My 10K inspection showed 5.5mm left on the fronts and 7mm on the spare. The spare has only done about 400 miles, so that's 2mm or less wear on the fronts in 10K.

At that rate they should last to 30K, although I may rotate before then, or, if I ever get my finger out, finish them off on a track day :)

(Mine are the Contis BTW)

Apart from TaviaRS's 'Ring and rubber fetishes which will lead to tyre-eating practices beyond imagination, I am flabbergasted by the wear other RS drivers are quoting - some of those figures are terrible

I've now done 75,000km on four Uniroyal Rallye 540s. The fronts have just been replaced but the original rears are still on and looking for another 10 to 15k. And I'm not treating the Legacy very friendly - I'm a late braking/quick turn-in sort of fellow and will try to get it sideways on any occasion.

Is this purely the advantage of AWD? I'm interested to hear about the tyre wear that other 4x4 drivers are experiencing.

Having said that, in the past I came close to establishing the same figures on fast FWD Bridgestone-shod Honda VTEC cars, and those were still without TC, so it can't be all FWD-related. So is it the Contis?

I got 45,000 miles from the front tyres on my Impreza Sport, (got rid of the car at 55k and never changed the rears!) though the bulk of that was on motorways, and I would imagine that motorway driving is much more friendly on the tyres,

Hmmm. Is it something about the way I drive or do the Dunlops just wear really fast?

What's the standard brand of tyre used on the 17" wheels?

Freakcrab

Ive got the Continental Sport Contact 205 50 17s on my Y reg RS. Even though ive only done 11300 miles in my car (nearly all around town , apart from a few jaunts to the UCI at Fort Kinnaird) my fronts now have pretty knackered 'shoulders' ( i do admit to having a liking for the ASR light now and again!!) but the rears are almost perfect , hopefully if i get them rotated at my 1st service (due july @ 2 yrs old , I'll be nowhere near 20K ) I can get another year out of the ones on the front just now.

after 1 year and 12000 miles had to replace the two passenger side tyres - unfortunately down to chunks out of the side wall - I love parallel parking on the street..... Luckily the company pays!

I wonder if this is "helped" by the size / shape / sharp edges of the RS alloys - I never have this problem on the Rover 200 (regular steel wheels) - anyone else taken bits out of their tyres by parking?
