Pipercross panel filter, not fitting?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Bought a panel filter from awesome GTI on Thursday (Came today, ace!).

Tried fitting it but the airbox wont close after... I manged to get 2 of the 4 lugs in but it's REALLY not going on properly.

With the standard it's easy.

Any tips / tricks?

I rung awesome but they just said keep trying... suppose theres not much else they can say over the phone.

Also are the fins that you can cut off at the bottom? I was tempted, but couldnt work out what difference it would make! :)

You usually have to apply a little grease to the seal to get them to slide it.

Its also a lot easier for the novice if you remove the airbox or at least disconect the MAF.

The rubber seal around the panel filter yea?

Is it hard to disconnect the MAF? Never done it before. Wish it would just bloody fitted easy!

Could try the grease trick, not sure i've got any though :(

K+N filters usually come with a little tube of grease for this purpose.

Ace! Hmm, any househould items I could use as grease?

I wondered what that was for :o Mine just slotted into the air box fine :D

Nevermind, guess I'll either wait for a service and skoda to do it or sell it on.

Speant about 20 minutes trying to get the airbox back on!

It is the right part number for the car? Whenever I've changed air filters, I just lift up the top half of the air filter box and drop it in....

Yep, ordered properly from GTI awesome. IT fits in the slot fine, it's just getting the airbox back on.

Put the OEM filter and it shuts easy.

Bit annoyed really...

Hi Mate

Sorry about that

Mine fitted like a glove

Put it in and check round to see if there is a bit sticking out :(

If I can help just give me a shout

Are you local at all?

Nope, all the way down in Cornwall!

It seems to fit really nicely in the box, I think the rubber seal just seems to be a bit harder / taller than the standard one. Nothing noticeable.

If I unscrew that part (in red) will it disconnect from the airbox, or is there other things connecting that pipe to it. Just thinking I might be able to get in at a better angle without worrying about messing anything around it up!!!!

Thanks in advance!

Hi Mate

I have just shown the pic to one of our guys

He said take the top off completely , remove the big quick release clip on the side of the MAF and take the top off completely to get it to fit correctly

Try that and let me know how you get on

Thanks Sarah,

Don't mean to be a spaz here, but do I still have to unscrew where I circled on the picture, or do I JUST remove the big quick release clip which is this I assume:

(White circle).

Sorry to be a pain!

just squeeze the 2 ends of the clip together with some mole grips and move it to one side, then pull off the pipe from the MAF , you should no be able to lift up the top (with the MAF wire still attached) and fit the filter in

I brought a Piper filter a few weeks ago and yes it was not a very good fit!

Like you say it sits a litle taller than the standard filter?

I fitted mine in 10 mins with a little bit of force and washing up liquid :D

Just undo the nuts on the airbox( I letf the MAF in place & just undone the box screws ) and slip the clips out!

When you re fit it put some washing up liquid around the sides and half screw the nuts back down and then try and get the clips back in (Need to push real hard)

It will go but its just a pain

Slip the clips out, how do you mean mate?

So undo the 2 screws for the airbox, and then what? :)

Also where do I put the fairy liquid? On the side on the filter, or the lugs on the airbox?

  • Author

Ok, so I've tried half screwing the box back in place and forcing the clips back into place... but they're meant to get in first and no matter how hard I push they won't go in.

Pi**ed off, waste of

AwesomeSarah, can I return this item please?

I'm gonna order a filter that actually fits the airbox properly (not awesomes fault at all, the service was great).

If it's this much hassle getting it on, whats it going to be like getting it off?!!!!

Nevermind...

It may be that the PU around the filter is a little hard compared to the original filter, a small amount of washing up liquid (literally a drop) smeared over the top of the PU seal should be enough to grease the lid into seating properly.

You won't have any hassle removing it.

Hi Mate

I am so sorry about that

Yes send it back and I can see if we can get it checked out and I can get a K&N one ordered for you

Or I can check the one you have checked out and check another Pipercross one sorted

Up to you my dear

Tried that Joff, I was seriously pushing down on the lid and I'm not a small guy :P

Trust me it will fit, i have a pipercross panel filter and yes it is hard to get the box back down i just used a bit of force and it went nice tight fit though!! If you like i will check the part no on the box i still have? It's a good filter though mate!

But it is possible that the PU is just harder than normal for some reason, so just won't compress.

Ethos, get the filter back to Awesome to exchange for another Pipercross one. As gmaster said, it's a good filter so give them another chance :D It's inevitable that occasionally things won't go to plan, just the way it is.

I waited ages for my cupholder to arrive from Skoda only to find it had been broken somewhere along the way and glued in the "open" position! Swapped it for a good'un and been happily cupping ever since ... :P
