MFD2 upgrade. Sound quality and ease of install?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I am thinking of picking up an MFD2 unit for my new Octy thats arriving soon. The model number is 1Z0 035 194 A and it is a CD based unit.

I have a few questions regarding this upgrade and hoped that someone could answer them for me. :)

1, Is this MFD2 unit the best factory unit you can get for the Octy 2? ie there is no revision B, C... or a DVD version available? (im sure ive seen VW MFD2's as C version revisions and DVD)

2, The car will come with a Stream MP3 unit and 8 speakers as standard. How does the sound quality of this unit compare to the MFD2? (I have read contradicting views on this so far).

3, Is the actual output of the MFD2 4x 20w or 4x 40w? (Again, I have read conflicting specs on the web. I presume this rating is RMS)

4, Will the MFD2 be able to drive my 8 speakers and control the 6 disc boot changer just as the Stream MP3 would?

5, Will the MFD2 display the navigational directions in the maxidot display area?

6, Will I loose the ability to run my Creative Zen MP3 player to the aux socket located in the jumbo box?

7, Would you say there are any downsides to swapping the Stream MP3 for the MFD2?

Sorry for all the above questions but I just need some confirmation to give me the 'guts' to go ahead and get the unit ordered up.

Thanks in advance guys,

Lee

1. Currently yes unless you spend silly money on the new one with Hard Disk and Touch Screen but it's VW only.

2. I think my MFD2 sounds better.

3. Don't know tbh but pretty sure it will be RMS.

4. Yes

5. Yes

6. Yes

7. Loss of MP3 compatibility however the MFD2 has much better AV compatibility.

As above.

2. I agree. I have also changed the speakers but it's not necessary.

3. I believe 4x20w but Stu reclons there is a line out which I am dying to try with a sub.

6. Get a Phatbox.;)

Guys - thats great info, thank you.

Ive noticed from Stu's page that there is indeed a 'B' version of this unit. Whats the difference between this and the more commonly available 'A' revision?

Finally, STu - what is the model name of the hard drive based VW unit please?

Cheers again,

Lee

It might look like a lot of money but it's only slightly more than a factory fit MFD2.

Looks the business too

  • 7 months later...

I have tried to read about MFD2 a LOT before making the buying decision.

Few things still bother my mind.

My car is 2008 Octavia with Stream.

It has Bass, Mid and treble adjustments.

When looking at MFD2 manual it seems like there is only one bar which you can use to drag for more bass or more treble direction.

Is that really enough to get good sound quality?

I have not had good sound with stream.. If I remember right I have -3 tbe, -1 mid and +1 bass.

Even with that the bass is not good with low volume and needs loudness on.

That makes it about listenable, but when more volume is adjusted the loudness makes the sound really thick and treble really jumps to my face =( ..feels like this would need more adjustment via volume than anything.

I have Peerless XLS 10" and DLS A6 laying in shelf because stream does not have line output.. so that would deffanetly be improvement.

Mostly my stereo change intentions are because of sound quality, or lack of it. Navi would be a nice plus and MFD2 prices are tempting.

Do you know if there is same "amplifier" in MFD2 as in Stream?

And please a few comments about sound quality =)
