Shell has introduced a V-Power version of it's diesel fuel - see What Car? for more info.

Meanwhile, take part in this poll...

This won't necessarily be true - if it produces a proportionally higher mpg :-)

well if it actually does something, maybe... unlike BP Ultimate which does sweet FA as far as I can tell

Shell Diesel Extra gives me 1-2 mpg better fuel economy, but the car runs smoother for sure. I happen to get it at a price that is roughly the same as the normal derv from Esso in this area, so then it's a no-brainer.

With regards the BP stuff, BP regular derv makes my car smoke like crazy, the ultimate doesnt. The performance appears the same though :)

Shell extra cheaper than derv elsewhere so i'll get it.

V-Power.... I can sell you some snakes. ;)

I've been using it for the past three months and it seems fine; nice to see that Shell are rolling it out Nationwide now.

Can't though definitively say its better than Shell Diesel extra, and adding Millers Diesel Sport 4 to it (V-power) doesn't seem to make any difference either.

Currently decided to run a few tankfulls of BP Ultimate Diesel. Only done 150 miles on first tank so far and, again, difficult to quantify a difference. Might then try Shell Diesel Extra with Millers to see if that makes a difference (apart from being cheaper).

Price wise Shell V-Power currently is 101.9ppl with BP Ultimate at 102.9 - 104.9ppl from the garages I can get to.

My advice; when you can find it, no harm in trying a tankful or two before deciding whether to use it regularly.

Interesting fact (did some research a while back); all Diesel fuel in UK is guaranteed to be minimum 51 Cetane (higher Cetane = more power). I spoke to the Tech guys at Shell who said that both their Diesel Plus AND V-Power are 'guaranteed' Min 51 Cetane but mostly are produced higher. BP Ultimate is GUARANTEED to be 55 Cetane. Make what you will of that.

Millers boost cetane doesn't it? Which is why I usually chuck about 70ml in with a full tank of diesel (tesco bog basic is fine, and my car's power is never lacking when running this combination)

Yup!

Fair comment; you ought to know with your mods, which perhaps make the engine more sensitive to good/bad fuel.

Cant say I've noticed much difference in performance on mine, just smoke levels

When I can buy diesel at 93.9p per litre it would need to be very good for me to buy fuel at

Buy it whenever I can but more because of recouping the cost of my company fuel card. I can't say it improves the performance or mpg though. "Paid"

It's too much of a jump in price over the standard stuff for me , just like the BP ultimate diesel which costs 10p more than the cheaper standard diesel elsewhere

Is it down to what mileage people do? Personally I use around 50l a week so just find the cheapest diesel. Do people that opt for expensive fules do less miles?

There is something in that - if I only used 5 litres a week then the difference in cost would be about the price of a can of coke and not something that would bother me , but if I did that little mileage I'd have a large petrol engine instead of diesel :)

Nope! :D

I've been using Shell V-Power diesel for the last three months (since it came out), and used Optimax/V-power in my previous car for two years or so before that.

I do 18 - 20,000 miles pa at my own expense. That is a 50L fuel up (

I tried shell V-Power deisel the other day cant say i noticed any difference at all and it's 98.9p per litre compared to 93.9 for shell deisel extra at my local garage so i think i'll stick to shell deisel extra.

I've tried Bp's Ulimate deisel as well and i didn't notice that either but i've never used it for long periods! (normally 1 or 2 tanks)

I've used both V-power diesel & BP Ultimate Diesel, and I found the performance of them was broadly similar. Both reduced smoking, with V-Power offering a slight increase in power over BP Ultimate. Where I am, both cost similar amounts, but I've settled on BP Ultimate. Over time, BP Ultimate gives 5-8mpg more than supermarket fuels, and about 2mpg over V-Power.

I did try a tankful of the V-Power and I can't say I noticed a huge difference between it and the diesel extra.

Think I'll stick to the Diesel Extra which is 6p/litre cheaper and just stick some Millers in...

My local dropped standard shell diesel with the move to Diesel Extra, and now they've dropped that and replaced it all with V-Power Diesel.

Priced at 99.9p a litre.......eye-watering.

However, running it with a double-measure of Millers yields "interesting" results *cough*

I use this on my golf and I swear by it. If I use bp ultimate my car runs really sluggish but if I put V power in, it runs as new again :D

There is only one garage anywhere near me that does it though - so it needs to become more readily available!

That's a good price; generally 102.9p - 104.9p for Shell V-Power/BP Ultimate in NW London/Herts
