W8 interior light mod

Mods:

If the pictures are too big feel free to resize them, I made them fairly large for picture clarity reasons :o

I managed to fit the Passat W8 interior light after the initial problem with the connector plug.

The plug faces the rear of the car when installed and fouls the sunglasses holder mechanism so a little modification to the fitting is required:

IF YOU PLAN TO UNDERTAKE THIS MOD IT WILL BE AT YOUR OWN RISK, IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG PLEASE DO NOT BLAME ME!!!

Here is the main guide for removing/refitting the fittings:

W8 Inner Light

1: The W8 light fitting in it's original format, you can see the plug sticking out in the wrong direction (the original fitting points upwards)

Make a note of the pin sequence as the connector only goes on one way, keep the original W8 Socket for reference.

2: The plug housing has been cut away and the pins bent upwards

3: The pins are now bent back 180 degrees (be VERY careful not to snap the pins when bending them!!)

4: The W8 plug fitted to the light fitting, as you can see I drilled a small hole through the base of the fitting to secure the plug with a cable tie as the socket is no longer there to hold it as before.

The cable tie prevents the plug coming off and the pins from shorting, you can always take additional steps to further insulate the pins if desired but IMO the plug keeps them in check.

The extra wire as described in the main W8 guide is connected to the Grey/Blue cable that feeds into the rear of the light switch (terminal 10 if you look at the small black connector on the back of the switch).

I used a scotchlock as it's quick and simple but you may of course use whatever connection method you like :).

The wire runs above the windcreen in the roof lining and down the A-pillar to the rear of the fuse box (CAUTION FOR CURTAIN AIRBAG IF FITTED!!!!)

5: The finished article, I'll do a night time shot when sufficiently dark

Neat modification to the light fitting and looks good in the car.

Dunno how this one got in :D

Pity they never made a black one.

Neat addition to the car.

I had them as part of the interior light pack on an Audi A4 and they do look good at night. The only problem was that the instrument lights had to be turned up quite high to get a 'decent' interior glow.

I wonder if the red LED's could be changed for green ones to suit Skodas interior light scheme?

They could be changed to green but it would be a major hassle to do it, the green light would defeat the object of the red night lighting principle.

Even the switch lighting which is red is better than green (IMO) as you don't notice them at night.

That'll be because the original post is from 2007 and all the links got lost/changed when the briskoda forum got updated

i finished fitting mines yesterday.

i dremmeled about half the plastic of the connector on the light fitting itself off and soldered the wire directly onto the pins.

did find that the mounting holes dont match up however and required that i drilled 2 2.5mm pilot holes and fitted some 40mm screws

Any pics

nope didnt take any as didnt have the camera with me. if i remember ill pull it out on wednesday or thursday

Fitting my sunroof one from a superb this weekend once i've picked up the connector block from Skoda. Looks mint when I offered it up to the space.
