Problem found when I had aircon regassed

Both fans should operate when the aircon is on, yes.

Open the bonnet and youll see them both at the front if you peek down.

I havent had a chance to visually check myself yet, Ive been painting the calipers until it rained.

Could it be something simple like a fuse that is faulty.

Worst case scenario?

I dont seem to have much luck with cars and airon, my last car had the aircon taken out by a badger.

If one fan is going then it wont be the fuse, most likely cause would be the motor has burnt out. In most cases it wont make a difference, but if you drive the car hard then it may overheat.

Ive had a look and yes the small fan only comes on when the aircon is on, I assume the larger one should be on all the time then?

This has put a spanner in the works as I wanted to get a remap done, so I guess It would be prudent to respolve this before shelling out on a remap?

Yes both fans should run with the A/C on.

I had the large fan fail in my previous Mk I octy... early summer I didn't have a problem, but as the heat started going up to >30C it was obvious the A/C wasn't really working all that well. I went to have it regassed and they told me it was OK (apparently their machine measured the coolant/oil mixture *after* they removed it, so I was charged anyway) but the large fan wouldn't work so it couldn't raise pressure or something like that, I'm not a heat pump geek. Replacing the fan was bloody expensive, about 270 euros 3 years ago.

Mind you, the car didn't have a problem, the wee fan was perfectly capable of cooling the engine even while driving it hard at >30C ambient temperature, so I guess that it should provide sufficient cooling for the A/C radiator in colder climates. In scorching heat, it didn't do much at all though. What ****ed me of is that I'm quite certain it failed *before* the warranty expired (May 31st) but I only bothered to visit the dealer in july when I couldn't deal with the A/C not working as good as it used to.

One of the first things I noticed in my Mk II is that it only has one fan, hope it doesn't fail :)

The large fan is for the cooling system primarly so should really be working.

No aircon then?

Should have two fans if it has AC.
