New member with k04 question

Hey there all, i got myself a nice vRS 2003 plate a few weeks back and im very very happy-a nice car with everything in the right place and plenty of power to boot... however (theres always a 'however' isnt there!) im thinking about upping the hp and torque a bit.

Current: 202 bhp @ crank, 233lbft with induction kit and remap (This seems low-am hoping it just needs a freshen up, also the EM light is on)

Theres loads of threads about the k04 and seem to be mixed views. ive got the following... Will it work and what sort of power can I expect?

K04-022 (from late spec S3)

Manifold from above

Injectors from above

TIP

Downpipe and cat from 225 TT

Now just waiting for a 3" MAF

I plan on fitting a FMIC and remap to make most of above.

Any input appreciated-i notice a lot of people saying its not worth it-did you just fit the k04 and not remap? im thinking that lot above should remap to about the same as an S3 or 225TT?

Pete

I would think you probably need to sort the oil pipes for turbo as well.

I kind by the time you've gone and done all that you may as well have sorted an IHI or a GT28.

Yes...they are probably more expensive but the potential for more is there.

K04 will probably give 260-280bhp max.....IHI will give 280-350bhp depending on internals. GT28 a little more.

I guess it'll boil down to cost and what you want to do.

From personal experience the IHI is like the standard just more....spins up quicker than a GT28 but doesn't have the same kick higher up. This is my own personal view of having the IHI and having sampled DaveU's GT28.

oh yer forgot about the oil and coolant lines. Thanks for your help. As ive already got pretty much all i need (at quite a reasonable price) i think ill drop the k04 in. ill be quite happy with 260 useable horses. I just cant spend the thousands needed for a GT or IHI

Has anyone done the k04 themselves-any hints/tips?

a custom remap to make the most of the new turbo and FMIC too

not done the K04 but i had an ATP GT2x kit fitted and thats quite nice :)

spools quicker than the IHI and makes about teh same power.

see now im having a lil ponder to myself.... the GT2X and GT28r are good looking contenders aswell. Quite a bit more money but in terms of bang for buck and grief they are better than fitting the k04.

The remap and FMIC are going to set me back a grand, so do i want to pour another grand into it to get a GT28r??? hmmm

bengie, how much did your GT2X cost plus everything to get it working? ive got injectors so it should just be the eliminator kit + remap + fmic

Bit more than that with with the GT28r, you then have to add the uprated engine parts, pistons, rods, downpipe etc

surely the 28r will run fine with standard internals? it only flows 310 doesnt it?

Am i right in Saying the internals are good for 350bhp? And if not, what needs to be changed?

IMO about 325 is safe, after that its a greying area, I did rods, pistons & valves for 356

That sounds like a good idea. Just to be on the safe side, rather than a niggling feeling it can blow at any moment. lol.

What Rods, Pistons and Valves do you run?

me, eddy and stuart have 4x4 not a vRS so where we can put mroe power down that in turn puts more stress on gear box and internals. chances are you'd be fine at 350bhp on standard internals as long as you don't try your best to blow it up :)

Jabba built if for me, I think it was Pauter rods, Audi S3 pistons, not sure what the valves were.

Held it at 170 last year whilst cruising with a 355 Fezzer into Italy & it didnt go bang, that was 170 on the tom tom, speedo was on lap 2 !!, the 4x4 clock only goes to 150
