Fabia VRS towbar (again!)

Featured Replies

I have read all the previous threads on this. I have also done a bit of research about the EC type approval process.

Everything that I have read about this seems to suggest that the whole point of the type approval is that once this has been done in the EC, the car can then be sold anywhere in the EC without further type approval.

In this case, I can't see how the VRS can be approved for towing in Ireland and elsewhere in Europe, but not in the UK.

Has anyone got anywhere with Skoda on this or have any idea whether there is any possibibility of getting the type approval changed or something?

i think there is a petition going for this somewhere on the forum , there maybe more info in that thread , do a search

I tried for 6 months with Skoda Technical, The Police, and VOSA whom I tried to get a SVA from to no avail. If you want to tow with your Fabia vRS you have to do it in the full knowlege that it is illegal in the UK.

The main reason being the VIN plate doesn't have the total train weight in "B" I think it is, the value is zero.

This is the main reason I got rid of my Fabia as I tow

Has anybody found any further info re towing with a VRS or is it a lost cause. It seems to me to be nonsensical that the VRS is homologated for towing in the EU/Ireland but not in the UK. Why? :(

Had a look and yes it seems to point that the VRS is not homologated in Europe either. Oh well better put the Eriba caravan up for sale. The VRS is definitely not going!

What's the story about kit-cars towing things?

I mean: If I bought a kit-car I'd have to put it through a test (3 letters, cant remember what it's called) to ensure that it's roadworthy. After this I'd be able to MOT, Tax and insure it. Is there another test to check whether it can tow things?

If this were the case, and you managed to source all the bits for a VRS then you might be able to put it through these tests for a cost, register it on a 'Q' plate and tow things legally. (Declaring yours scrapped, taking the wheels off then putting them back on may or may not count as a kit car - you'd have to check! ;))

Although this would be slightly more expensive at first you'd save a packet on the insurance. (I played with the idea of buying a kit car a few years ago - to insure a 22 year old with Zero NCB on a 2.2l petrol Caterham style car that could do 0-60mph in around 4 seconds cost.... about

I enquired about putting a towbar on an Octavia vrs at the Dealers today. I mentioned it was somehting i never put on the Fabia due to the reasons mentioned in this thread. He said they are now allowed to put towbars on the Fabia vrs also. so it might be worth speaking to your dealer.

This was DM Keiths in Leeds

Will give that a try with my local dealer (Falmouth Garages).

I don't see how they can legally. Apart from the VIN plate showing no towing limit, the V5C likewise shows no figures for permissible towable mass, ergo you won't get insurance cover to tow.
