Door strips- adhesive?

Featured Replies

I was wondering what is used by VAG to attach the door and bumper strips.

If it's an adhesive is using heat the best way to remove and where can you get new sticky stuff?

Door strips are definitely a very tough adhesive. Not sure on the bumper whether there are grooves it sits in. When I did mine, I used a cloth covevered flat screwdriver and levered it up from one end, then once I got something I could grip, I wrapped the cloth around it and just pulled on it hard, but slowly (that sounds so rude :o) and it gradually came away. I used wd-40 and a cloth to wipe off the excess (and a thumbnail for stubborn bits)

Cheers, is it a dealer only for replacement adhesive and is it better trying to get brand new strips rather than getting some from a breakers yard? My 06 plate Passat has black strips and I would quite like the chrome ones available on the SE upwards.

Not sure if when they are removed from the original car that they are likely to get bent out of shape and difficult to remove the old glue and fix it back on the car correctly.

Ah - I would just use some bodyshop double sided tape. I blagged some off a mate who works in a bodyshop. Good stuff and really does stick almost anything to anything. There's a few parts of my car held together with this stuff, thankfully not the subframe to the chassis though. :D Mine were bent out of shape a bit by the method I used. heating up using a hairdryer may help. I had no intention of putting my strips back on, so I got them off as cleanly and fast as possible and they went straight in the dustbin.

New trims have the sticky stuff on it all ready. If not get some thin double sided tape on a roll and run two lines one top one bottom.

A caramel/toffee/fudge wheel is the best way to get it off. Bit messy but doesnt harm the paint work and takes seconds.

Never seen a toffee wheel Lummox please describe, worth a shot if it's quick and safe.

I'm guessing they are easy to get from VW and reasonably inexpensive!

Do you have any pictures of the toffee wheel etc and where a good place to get one?

I've ordered the replacement chrome strips today from my local VW dealer and want to be able to remove the old stuff quickly and safely.
