Update on the vRS steering problems

Featured Replies

Been to my official dealer and guess what?

Steering rack = dead.

There was an awful knocking sound when turning the wheel left-right while standing, and steering is absolutely horrible at speeds over 80km/h, the car is all over the road. It's getting worse day by day (I thought, what's the big deal, the car is able to steer? not anymore!). Any high speed turn is a gamble, like each front wheel wants to go in it's own direction.

Now the good part of the story :)

It's being changed under warranty hehe, I'm afraid to even ask how much it costs, I assume somewhere between 700 and 1000 euros

p.s. although I think the vRS suspension is seriously underengineered, the steering rack is prolly my fault :)

I agree entirely - and as far as I know its not just the vRS suspension that is seriously under engineered - its all the cars that use this platform, ie Skoda Fabia + Volkswagen Polo 9N + Seat Ibiza 6L - oh and I think maybe even the Audi A2. The quality of the materials used are substandard as well - and this statement includes the steering system! Still it is making a fortune for the repairers - pity its emptying our wallets and making sure that we dont buy any VAG products again (if possible) - so who will lose out in the end, hopefully VAG. Rant over, now who makes manufactures reasonable cars - probably the old favourites Ford and GM, at least you know that the dealers will not charge a fortune (except for that old favourite SMF - hope it goes out of fashion along with cambelts), as it has now been proved beyond any doubt that the "better quality and higher reliability" belief that came as standard with VAG products - has disappeared and we're being suckered good and proper. Rant definately over now!! Back to the garage to see what the latest problem is with the Polo 9N.
