Felicia 1.6 oil change

Featured Replies

Hi I'm a Skoda virgin!

I want to change the oil on my Felicia 1.6 0.

How do I remove the undertray to get at the sump plug?

It's a girlie thing but I want to try and do my own maintenance.

Hope to hear from you hunks with my answer.

Cheers

Diane

:P

first get something to collect about 5 litres or more oil!

now according to the haynes manual (not always correct or detailed)

it says you can get the the sump plug really easily. without undoing the side sheilds. but the undershield undoes just by undoing the retaining screws.

on the sump itself is a large bolt, get a spanner to fit, or a rachet, and undo this bolt then the oil will drain out of the sump.

allow time for it to drain out, then refit the plug to the correct torque.

next remove the oil filter it just twists off, (its in front of the cyinder block.)

moving the bowl to catch any oil that comes out, empty the oil from the filter into the container.

Fit the new filter making sure the old seal is off the engine, apply some clean engine oil to the filters sealing ring then fit the new filter.

slowly fill the engine with oil, waiting for it to drain down, when it reaches the bottom dipstick mark add 1 more litre, (use 10w 40 engine oil).

start the engine (the oil pressure light will go after a minute), then check for any leaks under the car, if ther are no leaks then refit the undersheild and dispose of the old oil and filter.

I have done this for the first time not so long ago so will try help on a first timer's perspective :)

I decided to buy some wheel ramps to do my oil change (

Handy hints:-

1) Make very sure you've replaced the drain plug and filter (if you're changing it too) before trying to refil the engine. This may sound patronising, but you'd not be the first person (and this includes some trained mechanics) to forget, and have to clean up several litres of brand new oil!

2) If you have any other jobs, say spark plug and/or air filter changes to do as well, start the oil change, and leave it to drain whilst you do the other stuff. You'll never get all the old oil out anyway, but this is a handy time-saver.

3) If you can get under the car without raising it, do so.

WRT the comments about the oil pressure light staying on longer when you first restart the engine after the change, not necessarily. It might or might not do so.

The key thing is to start the engine, let it idle for a minute or so, stop it and go away for a tea-break, then re-check the oil level before driving any distance.

well looks like you lot have just about covered it, not much left to say.

except. when your undoing the plug, take the socket off two or three turns before the end, and do the rest by hand.

this way when the plug comes free, you can pull it out the way quickish and not end up with oil all down your sleeve

and by the way, i am a hunk... he he he

My dictionary describes a "hunk" as "a shapeless mass of material": Perhaps I am a hunk after all? ;)
