coil problems...for half an hour. Thanks Horners!

Featured Replies

horners service strikes again!

on the motorway coming back from work and suddenly, the car started juddering really badly and the CEL came on. oh sugar, thought i, thinking it could be related to my chip as that utilises the CEL( check engine light). however, a quick reset to standard mode later and the car still had the same , very worrying problem. i thought it could be the coil and so rang ian to ask what the symptoms were when his went. a quick confirmation of my car's problems ensued and i phoned horners. gary, the service manager, told me to bring the car in which i did and it was fixed and back on the road in half an hour. superb! :D

the full story however, is that gary is the organ grinder and i obviously dealt with one of his monkeys. at first, he started blaming my exhaust( saying it was causing a backfire ) and messing around with it and i told him pretty firmly( and with slight annoyance ) to just hurry up and check the coil. i stood over him as he checked the coil and replaced it and, lo and behold, all was right again. he started muttering something about having to check other things first before going to the coil as " they're hundreds of pounds each. "

having knowledge is a great thing! i told him they were only about 60 quid each and watched him squirm uncomfortably!! satisfaction for me, 100%.

its only because of reading forums like this that i even guessed it might be the coil and just thinking what the experience may have been like without this knowledge is pretty scary really.

anyhoo, end result is slightly off colour car for about 1 hour today. not bad i suppose, compared to the stress that manny had to go through to get his coil.

oh btw, the coil had gone on cylinder 1.

Huck,

Sorry to hear about your coil going. I wonder how they found one so quick.

At least a happy ending for you. I initially had a simillar experience. I originally took the car to another dealer (not my usual one) and they said it would take 1/2 hr on the vag diag tool. I knew it would take a couple of mins. Anyway that was a few weeks ago now, and I now have a spare coil in the boot courtesy of the skoda warranty and Jon (TaviaRS). they are

well........

after yours and ian's went, i rang horners to order in a spare for myself and gary in fact phoned me a few days ago to say that he had received the coils and had six in stock - i was going to pick up the spare when my car goes in for service in a couple of weeks.

unsurprisingly, he says that the coils are failing at a very high rate, something we already know......
