I hope this doesn't sound daft, but I'm quite new to diesel engines and wondering if they use spark plugs and if so any recommendation for my 1.9 estate.

Nope. glowplugs used to start them though. That's what the coil is before you start up.

Thanks for replying. So it would indicate when it needs replacing.

Not sure - If a glowplug packed up I imagine it would tell you one way or the other. I don't recall anyone on here having to change glowplugs on a TDI, and I've been on here quite some time.

I had issues on a Pug 306 DturboS and as time went on the glowplug symbol took longer and longer to go out and it was down to worn out glow plugs.

Seemed to remember that it was about 80,000 miles.
