06 Turbo blown - what SHOULD be replaced?

Featured Replies

Can you help?

My brother has an 06 VRS with circa 20,000 on. Recently his turbo went bang and was towed to the dealer for a replacement turbo. The response from the dealer was strange in that they hadn't swaped one before and it took them ages to refit.

When he picked the car up there was no paper work to say what had been replaced and was reassured that it was on the database.

I recently saw a post on this site that suggested that the turbo, intercooler and Cat all need replacing if the turbo fails.

Please can someone confirm what exactly needs replacing when this happens so that I can check with the dealer and make sure he not getting a raw deal and that they have swapped everything that needs replacing. Because of his age I think he gets messed about alot and on past experience it wouldnt suprise me if they have cut corners

Any help is greatly appriciated!

Cheers

VRS Quiche;)

The turbo, oil seals, possibly the intercooler, any damaged pipework, possibly the exhaust also.

You done a search of the recent threads?

Seems a few 06'ers are going down with this particular illness.

The intercooler and cat should be checked and replaced if required. It kinda depends on how the turbo fails. If oil gets down into the intercooler then it's normally changed likewise if it goes the other way the cat should be changed.

I've done a search but cant find anything specific as to what needs to be replaced, its mostly people recommending a performance turbo replacement etc rather than skoda part bu it doesnt help really as it on waranty

The performance ones are generally recomended for cars where the owner has to buy the Turbo.

Cheers Tom VRS and VRS Stu - is it possible to spot damaged around the linkages and then of course determine if other parts shoul have been swapped?

(I'm starting to sound like Blanche out of Corrie)

Well it will always depend on the nature of the failure.

When mine blew, we found a lump of impeller in the Cat. Think about that for a moment.... Which is why it took them over a week to strip it all, check it, and then replace the turbo, intercooler and Cat.

Your brothers may not need all that but it is likely.

i've seen a few recently where the shaft has snapped , but with no debris or oil seal failure , just get no boost
