How long can you make an exhaust last?

Featured Replies

Have found some holes in my exhaust over the weekend - very annoying esp as I don't want to spend much on the car at the mo - just bought a house (and want an Octavia at some point next year).

Bought some exhaust gun gum (filler basically) and attacked it this evening in the dark which was a bit of a laugh. I think I have shut it up though. MOT time is in Nov - do you think it will be ok for the MOT if I keep adding filler?

Also got a cracked screen on the passenger side - about 10 inches long, but not on the drivers side. This happened in June, though as the screen is laminated it won't ever smash so I have been told. The question is will it pass an MOT in this state??

Best of luck - had Renault years ago and I swear it knew it was going in two weeks time. Every time I used Gun Gum, the following day another hole would appear :thumbdwn:

And so it went till we traded in the car.

Bet they had a laugh / frown when they looked at it :D

Cracked screen is an instant MOT failure. Problem is these days the screen is part of the rigidity of the passenger shell of the car and it has been designed that way so if you have an accident the car folds and crushes in an expected manner. Take this away because of the crack and you get an unsafe structure.

The problems with the exhaust gum is that it gets blown falls out. Again it is a tricky one with the MOT as it will muck up your gas reading if they miss the holes. It depends on how stringent the MOT station is that you take it to.

You can botch the exhaust through the MOT, tape, filler, whatever. If its not leaking it'll pass.

The screen though, no way round that - it WILL fail.

exhaust sections cost bugger all. just the filler probably cost nearly the price of a new section, and, if the rust has got though the shell, then the chances are that the whole of the inside has collapsed.

Thanks for your advice, looks like the screens a no go then!

The exhaust has mostly got pitting holes on joint sections etc, so I should be able to get it through the MOT with a bit of luck. I will give it a good tidy up before Nov and cross my fingers!

No luck I am afraid - really started to blow yesterday - sounded like I had a big back box! I took it to the local garage to have a look at it, and the exhaust had come detached from the back box - so no hope there then.

I got a replacement fitted today, both sections up to the CAT - cost £90 incl fitting which was good value I thought. Though since driving it a bit, its knocking something I think. I will take it back tomorrow - screen next before MOT time.

When I got my Felicia in June it was equipped with a stainless exhaust. A new experience for me after 30+ years of cars with rusty tubes and tins, gungum &c. WIll be interesting to see how long it lasts.

Here in Sweden price is about twice a normal (corroding) system or about £200 (middle and rear but no cat of course)

your windscreen will only fail if it is deemed unsafe as the MOT states that the windscreen must be free of cracks or significant damage within the drivers field of view. Basically as a crude measure if you sit in the car and put a ruler from the centre of the steering wheel to the windscreen and put a felt tip mark. Then measure 145mm to the left and the same to the right. If this is ok it is then up to the garage to specifiy if any other cracks elsewhere on the screen are structural. I would try your luck as you never know, plus you get 7 days to return it to the station. £90 v reasonable for new exhaust by the way.

Cheers for the advice about the screen harryhill, I m going to take it to an MOT testing station to see what they say about it before I get it MOT'd at my usual garage. The exhaust is good now, and makes a difference performance wise as well - it was backfiring a bit before!!
