Removing fine scratches from alloys - polish out?

Featured Replies

Firstly, let me say I have been an idiot.

I don't think I have ever propely cleaned my alloys (not sure of the name of them - 2000 SLX Tdi) in the 18 months I have had the car, and I do 80 miles a day, so they got pretty filthy.

So this weekend I set about giving them a good clean. I used one of those green and yellow sponge pads you get for doing the washing up. Everything was great. Then this morning I noticed that in the sunlight you can see lots of long fine scratches - I assume the green side of the sponge was a little too abrasive.

Is there any kind of product I can get to polish the scracthes out, or am I screwed for ever? The scratches are not like kerb damage, but because there are lots of them it is very noticable.

Thanks

you will need a proper polish.

something like Meguires #83 to polish the scratches out.

really though i have to ask why have you used a washing up pad? There are plenty of microfibre mits to do the job

oooooooooooooh dear. If u cant get them out then its a respray jobbie

Learnt from my mistake though, isn't that the important thing :P

could be a costly one. personally i just use an old toothbrush

Theres a lesson there...

...never clean your car ;)

Doesn't sound like the scratches are too deep. A good bit of polish, and few hours spent on each wheel should have them sorted. Good luck :)
