this may be a dumb question - but if it allowed you to save/export as a .csv file, will it not allow you to load/import as a .csv file ?

mind you , we are talking Micro$oft here ...

not for inbox messages no. which is odd because it allowed sent messages to be saved as a csv

Which version of Outlook are you running?

My 2007 copy here allows you to import CSVs.

PM me if you want me to try a test, you could send me one of the CSVs.

im using outlook 2007. i can import csv just not to the inbox. i saved all my inbox messages to a csv instead of a pst. the csv for the contacts and the sent items imported fine. like i said its just the inbox one that wont

Oh right. Did you export all the messages, then delete them from a PST/message store then?

Steve

can you not import it somewhere else (like a personal folder, under a different name) and then move the mesages into the inbox ?

As a last resort -

You could import the csv into Excel and then copy and paste the info into a text editor.

But Outlook is the pits for some things :thumbdwn:

I'm not seeing the problem. I just did a test CSV (Windows format) export of some Briskoda alert emails, to test.csv.

I then created a test folder within Outlook, ran an import on test.csv and the messages copied to that location without problem.

Do you get an error when you try to import?

Yes i get the following:

---------------------------

Translation Error

---------------------------

A file error has occurred in the Comma Separated Values (Windows) translator while initializing a translator to build a field map.

Outlook was unable to retrieve the data from the file "C:\Users\The Stig\Desktop\Inbox.CSV". Verify that you have the correct file, that you have permission to open it, and that it is not open in another program.

Maybe open it up again in Excel, convert to different type of csv (I'm sure there are options here) and try again.

Alternatively could be you're not the real Stig

Re the 'not open in another program' - download Unlocker (brill Freeware proggy) and check if any other program is 'hooked' into the CSV file.

In any case - download Unlocker - really useful

UNLOCKER 1.8.5 BY CEDRICK 'NITCH' COLLOMB

Go for the usual, reboot and try afresh! As Val says, it could be Outlook itself hanging onto the file...
