Just had very low speed shunt - advice please

Featured Replies

I reckon about 5mph. I've broken a bit of bumper trim and seem to have very very slightly bent in the lip of the bonnet grille, such that it's couple of mm tighter against the bumper than it was. It was into a large old van that was undamaged and the driver wasn't remotely bothered about insurance details. To look at the damage is very very subtle. Nobody would notice it unless you were really scrutinising it. Bonet opens and closes perfectly.

What's worrying me is if I could have damaged / moved an engine mount or anything else. Nothing sounds different as far as I can tell and I can't feel any vibration. I don't want to claim on insurance because of what it would do to my renewal.

The really scary thing is the 1200 mile variable service indicator came on when I just started it up on the drive. The first time since it was serviced just 6500 miles ago. What could have triggered this? :( Would somebody with a vagcom be able to tell me? I'm s****ing myself.

*EDIT* - I feel like such a total idiot for how it happened. We were crawling at walking pace down this stretch of road with a tramp on the pavement making a bit of a scene shouting and talking to himself and gesturing. Everybody noticed him. When I was along side him he really freaked out and I looked up at him the split second the van in front came to an abrupt halt. I am so utterly, completely pi$$ed off with myself for allowing it to happen.

Aren't the bumpers designed to take the damage from a low speed impact (up to about 8mph?) leaving the rest of the car fine?

Maybe best just to get it looked at.

I'm afraid I can't help much with your technical question, but i was gonna say dont beat yourself up about losing concentration for a split second. We all do it, every single day, especially when there's a distraction nearby - you were just unlucky this time!

I hope it turns out ok. I guess i would suggest popping into a dealer, explaining what happened and just asking them to have a look over. If they start coming up with bills/stuff to fix, take it to another one too, for a 2nd opinion.

Took it to the garage today. Plugged the computer into it, no fault codes stored on any module. Reset the service interval and it looks ok. Will just have to sort out the bonnet and bumper trim.

Lesson learned!

Get it to a delaer's garage NOW!!

Mine did the same, and then when the engine mount failed 6 days later, Skoda said i had twisted the chassis.

Your damage even sounds identical to mine.

Seeing as my car had/has alleged chassis damage, and no engine, it is being dragged through Skoda, and now VW are dealing with it, 14 weeks since failure nearly, and still no sign of resolution.

If you get a dealer to have a quick look, then if anything does happen, you will hopefully have a document saying that "Skoda inspected, and did not see any damage that could lead to a major failure" saving the sort of hassle i am being put through at the mo...

I can't believe that they still haven't sorted that out. Have you any idea how its going or do they keep you in the dark ?

Women and warm weather are the worst distractions, there should be a law against it! promotes unsafe driving :)

Have you had it conclusively proven that there was appreciable chasis deformation? I wondered if just the sudden jolt forward in the impact could damage an engine mount?

I wonder how much a dealership would want to confirm that there's no hidden damage which could cause such a failure. They could be on it hours and hours at their ridiculous labour rates. :(

Nope. Skoda said my Chassis was twisted. My Insurance didnt say it was, but then didnt say it wasnt... But recent inforamtion suggests they believe the mount/assembly to be at fault.

The situation is a tad Gay.
