Airbox and throttle body search

Featured Replies

I have tried searching through the forums but cant find an answer or any pictures of what some people call de-finning the airbox. I had a look in my airbox and mine appeared to be flatish all the way round.

Also, daft question but as I dont have a haynes manual yet, where is the throttle body? Is it on the front left hand side of the engine just before the inlet manifold?

Thanks

The inside of the air box has moldings on, people remove them to allow air to flow more freely. I don't have a photo unfortunately.

The throttle body is bolted to the left of the intake manifold. It has a large diameter rubber pipe coming from the intercooler up to it along with a much smaller pipe (on top) and a wiring plug. It's held onto the manifold with 4 allen bolts.

My airbox didn't appear to have any mouldings onit, but I shall look again in daylight.

I thought that was it but I thought the throttle body is usually after the MAF in the pipes.

thanks anyway, oh and I changed my sig after the comments the other night:P

Sri5, I think this are the thin plastic support lines at the bottom of the air box...

I was too tempted to de-fin mine but wasn't entirely sure if they were the right bits and I didn't want to start hacking away!

Not sure if it'll make any difference either.

The throttle body is after the MAF. The MAF is straight after the air box.

i have done similar things to vauxhalls where the furniture in the airboxes was huge but the Skoda one seems tidy enough. I was wondering weather it was worth doing when my pipercross filter arrives.

I cant imagine any difference will be felt either

I think I'm thinking of the wrong thing then!! Do you know of any pictures floating around that might help me?

That is where I was thinking - i obviously dont have a way with words when it comes to describing things:D

Thanks for help lads, thats my evening tommorrow sorted now....

If you're planning on cleaning it out, remember to have a new gasket on standby :)

Now theres something I never thought of. I was going to just pull the hose off and clean around the butterfly whilst leaving connected to the inlet manilfold. I know its a half arsed job but ....

I suppose you could, but I wouldn't. You risk getting crap into the inlet manifold which wouldn't be fun. For the sake of a £1 gasket and 2 minutes to remove the bolts, I would do it properly.

Sorry, what do you mean by "gaskets".

I'm thinking about cleaning my throttle body soon...trying to search for a guide as I write this! :P

Ok, just had a quick look on my lunch.

So, undo the 4 allen key bolts... undo the air intake, take off the top breather pipe then side it out?

I'm used to working on my girlfriends 205 gti where everything is on loose and easy to do! ha!

Yep. You will need a new clip for the smaller pipe.... Mine has been replaced with a jubilee clip.

Cool thanks mate, looking like a pretty easy thing to do.

Do you have to move any other pipes to get it off?

Might see if my local has a spare gasket I can pick up later so I can do this over the weekend.

I suppose I could just unclip the large pipe and have a look in and see if it actually needs cleaning before taking it all off!!

Does the tension need to be correct?

One of the guides says to d/c the battery, don't have to do this?
