Doing a deal....

Featured Replies

Going to pop into my local dealer this Saturday to try and thrash out a deal, using a trade in. Here's the deal so far....

£13,500 offered for my part-ex, £1,500 discount off new car.

Free upgrade on vRS TDi estate:

18" wheels, dual a/c, jumbo and rear electric windows

Extras:

Race Blue, front & rear parking sensors, maxidot, cruise, sunset glass, auto dim mirrors, rain & light sensors.

Difference required to deal - just shy of £6k, looking to pay cash. Dealer has offered to take my part-ex at this price but meantime I will advertise privately in the hope I get more, over next 2 weeks. Ideally I want to get cash deal down to a more reasonable £3k....

Would like to build a relationship with my local dealer as its really close to home (20 min walk), but would look elsewhere if the price was substantially different.

Looking at buyacar.co.uk, they could do a very good deal but have learnt that cars are pre-registered - so I'm second owner. Not a major problem but a consideration, though I intend keeping this car for at least 3 years....will it make that much difference? Probably not.

Anyone got any thoughts? Will certainly be haggling for more off new, £2k sounds reasonable and obviously selling my part-ex privately will help - hoping for £15,500k or more. But am rather desperate to get into my new car and not sure I want to faff about selling privately....

Would appreciate any comments, thoughts on spec, suggestions on what deals others have had off new etc... What sort of freebies have others gotten from their dealers? Full tank of fuel? Floor mats? Boot mat? Anything else?

And yes, have read about new common rail engine due in Feb but will it make that much difference? Plus I don't want to wait that long....

Thanks for reading...

I recently (last week!) bought a new vRS TDi hatch in race blue with maxidot + normal freebies for £16870, a discount of £2170 (£3070 if you include the freebies). This was the price quoted by drivethedeal and the dealer I used agreed to match that, providing they pre-registered it as a demonstrator first to get extra allowance from Skoda. I'm not worried about being the second owner as it won't make any difference when the car is 3 years old with 60K on the clock, and regardless the invoice shows I collected the car on the same date as it was first registered.

Many thanks derbyjon! I've just configured on drivethedeal and buyacar, will take info in with me, see what they say.... Surprised dealers would agree to registering as second owner to reduce price - never heard of that before!

Also get a printout of your cars valuation from Glass's guide - free from vauxhall.co.uk - to use when discussing part-ex

its a good tool to make sure you arent being had over, but in real terms glasses, what car and parkers are all about 3 months behind where the trade is now.

if you were thinking 15.5k and they are offering 13.5k i think thats about fair. if they retailed your car it might go up for 15.5k, leaving a margin to haggle over and to make sure they can prep the car to forecourt standard. that discount sounds fine too nearing what is possible.

the jumbo box upgrade is only till the end of the month iirc. is it a car they have in stock or a factory order? sometimes its easier to get a little bit more from them if its a deal for this month.

but in short imoa your done some good bartering :)

Factory order is main option (though don;t like the ide of 10 week wait!) but there may be prebuilt stock with Skoda to check - might have to forgo an option or two, but only if the deal is right..

I haven't actually stated bartering yet! :)

wow so they just opened up with the 1500 discount :) thats good of them!

Yep... but I'm sure I can open them up some more ;)

is it the bmw your trading in? why the change?

  • Author

Yep.. Need more space.. BMW estate just not worth the money (which I don't have anyway!). Will be going on Piston Heads very soon.....

well i hope it goes for more than the px offer then! :)

Hell yeah, me too! :)

I would think, IMHO, that 2k discount would be pretty much as good as you'll get.

  • Author

£2k would be acceptable..but only offering £1500 at present.

Would a dealer be more willing to sell me a pre-built model over a new factory build? So much so that they would lower the price further for me to take one that didn't quite match my spec?

And amazing to read that a dealer would pre-register a car to enable a further discount (elsewhere on the forum). Is that normal practise? Worth me asking?!

It's not entirely proper for a dealer to register a car as a fleet car and to sell it before the three months fleet time. They stand to get into trouble if caught.

If you find a dealer whom has a target to hit then you'll possibly get lucky. I know of a hatchback with a significant discount because the dealer would like to move it on and I'm sure it's the same at many dealers.

I see, thanks Stu..

I hope my dealer is under target! ;)

ive heard of this myself, and i think although you get good discount if the dealership is found out they would get a proper kicking! plus if they went bust before the demo period is over, that car is still legally theirs, so you loose the car! :thumbdwn:

its happened to a interent company selling cars they got in bulk lease. when they went under all the cars that were still under the original lease agreement went back to the original supplier!!

trust me chap if they are like most dealers this month if they can get you into a car this month to add to their targets, they will. if they are close to target they might even do a balls out deal so they get their target! i say get stuck in :D

I doubt my dealer would be interested.... probably a good thing. Ta for info, much appreciated - if I knew how to "thank" people, I would.

Righto, this is the best time to deal - understood - will go in prepared to the max! I'm gonna bust me some balls! :)

I have paid the deposit, the wait is on.... Woohoo! :)

Its a factory order (none built to my required spec unfortunately) so that gives me plenty of time to sell my current car for more than they were offering, so some good news to the 8-10 week wait.

vRS Diesel Estate, Race Blue, FOC 18" wheels, dual A/C, Jumbo and electric rear window upgrade, plus optional extras of front&rear parking sensors, cruise control, maxidot, auto dimming mirror, auto light and rain sensors, sunset glass. Managed to get an additional £165 on top of the original £1500 discount, plus full tank of diesel and the heavy duty boot mat thrown in - £19,250 all in. If you add the FOC items, thats not bad going I reckon :) Plus its my local dealer - they seem a very nice bunch so hope they look after me.......

Will have a search but if anyone has a pic of Race Blue with the sunset glass, any chance of posting or sending a link please? Its the only thing I'm not convinced I actually need but know that it looks good on the estates, got 2-3 weeks to finalize options and £200 goes along way to buying bike racks etc...

Thanks to all for their help and assistance

Cheers!

Nice one....that's a cracking spec you've got there! I expect coming from a bmw (unless you had a lot of options on it), you wont know which buttons to press first! ;)

  • Author

Thanks Guinness. I had lots of toys in the beemer but yeah, lots of buttons to play with here too :)

Does the estate come with the 12v plug in the rear? I saw that the Scout does, dealer wasn't sure whether the vRS did?

Nice spec, not too much more than I paid for mine. :P :D

Hope you enjoy it as much I am.
