Urgent Suspension Question!

Featured Replies

Hi,

Yesterday I was topping up my washer fluid and noticed that the top of my suspension struts under the bonnet look odd.

Basically you have the mounting on each side at the back of the engine compartment with the top nut of the suspension part screwed down on top.

I thought the round piece bolted into the housing should be flush. Mine, though, are sat proud. One by about an inch and the other similar.

Is this normal (maybe for adjustments?) or is it a problem?

I hit a high 'ramp' at some road works a month ago that was more of a ridge in the road. Big bang, plastic shield below engine ripped away but everything appeared fine when driving.

What do you reckon?

Post up a picture mate, might make a bit more sense.

I think I know what you mean. I have a similar issue on my tdi One of the front springs is twanging on full lock, so I suspect its either got a bit of spring broken off or the top strut bearing has gone. When looking under the bonnet the drivers side top mount cover [black plastic clip on dome thing covering the strut nut] sits flush on the drivers side but is raisd by 1/2 " on the passenger side.

Judging by this thread I assume they are supposed to be sitting flush...does anyone have a picture of how these mounts are supposed to sit?

I think its possible that the struts on Stu's and my own octy ae sitting proud as some impact has pushed the strut through the bearing or rubber 'bung' thing at the top of the strut and thats the reason why our strut mounts are sitting proud ?

No they dont sit flush, the amound they stick out by depends both on steering angle and the amount of compression on the front.

On the octavia the top of the struts are not not connected to the car, the metal disc is there so that when you jack the car up, they dont drop through the turret.

The picture below, of my old car parked sitting on a completely flat road and you can just about see the gap.

Ok, I have photos...

On closer inspection they seem to be the same distance proud of the housing/ moulding of car body.

Have a look. Are these normal looking parts?

Thanks

they look fine to me. Dont forget is you park on an un-even surface then one side may be more proud than the other.
