Rating your car's performance and economy - a numeric scale

Featured Replies

The trade off between performance and economy isn't linear and varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Some cars & engines seem to get much better performance than others of a similar size which retaining economy , so here's a simple test of how good your car is.

Take the manufacturers combined MPG and divide it by the 0-60 time.

The higher the score , the better the vehicle is at striking this balance.

A slow car can still score well if it only uses a tiny amount of fuel , and a thirsty car can still do ok if it's very rapid.

Here's a few to get you started. What's the best and worst vehicles you can find using this rating system?

Octavia 2.0TDI 51.4 9.6 5.35

Octavia 1.9TDI 57.6 11.8 4.88

Octavia 1.8TFSI 38.2 8.1 4.72

Fabia 1.4TDI (70) 58.9 14.8 3.98

Fabia 1.4TDI (80) 61.4 13.2 4.65

Fabia 1.9TDI 57.6 10.8 5.33

BMW 118D 62.8 8.9 7.06

BMW 120D 58.9 7.5 7.85

BMW 118i 47.9 8.7 5.51

Focus 1.8TDCI 54.3 10.8 5.03

Hyundai i30 1.6CRDi 60.1 11.6 5.18

Koenisegg CCRX 16 3.2 5 :)

somewhere between a Focus 1.8TDCI and an Octavia 1.9TDI then...!

Mine averages 60mpg and it's PB 0-60 is 6.84 = 8.77. Luvverly. :D Perhaps even saying it's more likely getting 55mpg means it scores 8.04.

Mondeo 2.0 Auto 31mpg divide by 11.0sec = 2.81

(31 is the mpg recorded by ford, not real life figure)

Thanks, I was too embarassed to post mine Mazda3 1.6 = 40.9 / 11.2 = 3.65

Yeah, my car really isn't any good at anything, except costing a lot to run, but it is comfy.

My old Fabia was 70mpg and 10.56sec = 6.62, I'd love to have that car back.
