Leaking Doors!

Featured Replies

Have any of you had a problem with the vRS doors leaking in water when it rains or when you have washed it off??

My car has been in to Wigan Skoda dealers 3 times now and had seals changed, doors re-aligned etc.

They now tell me that they have been in touch with Skoda and it is now a known problem - apparently the water is leaking in through the top of the doors (bottom of the window) and they will have to take all the interior doors off and re-seal - mine is going in on Thursday to hopefully be fixed so I will let you know exactly what they did and more importantly if it has worked

This issue has been ongoing for some time.

The fault is caused by the drain holes in the doors being too small and too close to the sill, so any water in the doors cannot drain out, until you open the door.

My top tip is to make sure you open all the doors after you wash the car or it has been raining, to allow any water to drain out.

By sealing the doors, you are only masking the problem. You will be driving round with a gallon or two of water in each door until they drain out!

I am going to get my body shop man to have a look at my doors soon, to see if they can be modified to drain properly!

This fault appears to affect some people more than others and seems to affect the rear doors more than the front. I think this is the case because some drivers do not use the rear doors very often, so they are more likely to fill up!

As Fabby says, there's LOADS on this on here! It seems to be down to the drain holes being too close to the sill when the door's shut, so the surface tension of the water between the drain hole and the sill prevents the water draining away - as testified by the streams that come pouring out when you open the doors after a rain storm / trip the the car wash. I disagree with the statement that you shouldn't have it looked at - after all, opening the doors regularly may be the only way to empty out and backed-up water, but IMO you still want to be sure that you can get away with not using the car for a couple of weeks (if you're on holiday or whatever), without coming back to find the inside of it soaking wet!

Thanks Guys for your replies - I'm always abit nervous about my car going into the dealership as it seems to come out with more problems

I might attempt to look at the drain holes myself first

Cheers

Just to put my two pennies worth in, from my experience, the problem is NOT with the drainage holes in the bottom of the door, which can cope with the throughput of water if kept clear, but with the poor design of the door carriers and their seals (across most of the VAG range, not just Fabias) which allows any water running down the inside of the door to run straight inside the car before it reaches the drain holes! One look at the rear carriers, with a huge gap between the rivets where the aluminium panel bows out and provides absolutely no pressure against the seal at the lowest point on the door, makes this obvious. Copious amounts of good quality silicone sealant as per VRStu's guide usually seems to do the job, I've had no more problems since doing this, but basically the carrier design is at fault. It really should be hooked INSIDE the door panel at the base to ensure the water takes its intended course but VAG obviously decided to put production line efficiency over vehicle durability in this case. Very short sighted when you consider how many warranty claims this must have generated across the group!

This can be carried out by any good bodyshop if you want to avoid the dealer. Take along VRStu's guide and it should sort it. Only cost me £70 + VAT but I think they underestimated the job. No problems now though :)
