Octy HID Range Motor Wiring

Featured Replies

Guys.......i've been amalgamating a set of standard halogen headlight looms into my HID headlights to make them easier to retrofit.

I have done this before on my previous Mk4 golf - allowing use of the manual adjuster on the dashboard.

Looking at the halogen range motor - it has the standard 3-wire approach, with +/- supply plus a signal voltage wire.

However, the HID range motor has 4 - yes FOUR dang wires........

Can anyone shed any light? (no pun intended!!!)

MTIA !!

An OEM Xenon fit has load-sensitive automatic levelling, which I presume is done using 2 strain guages to determine front and rear ride heights. Any use to you?

And if I'm wrong, can someone tell us both how the levelling works?

Ken - I know how the Golf Mk4 system works - it uses potentiometer style transducers (located n/s/f and o/s/r) to equate ride height to a signal.....then it works out the attitude of the vehicle and applies a suitable signal voltage to the range motor.

I may be wrong (and hope so!) that the 4-wire version takes voltage pulses to move the range motor into position.

In the case of the 3-wire version, the motor has a closed loop control by means of a comparator that reads the adjuster position off an internal potentiometer and compares with the equivalent input voltage, and adjusts until they are equal.

Here is a wiring diagram for the basic Mk4 Golf headlights: http://www.bluegolf.demon.co.uk/images/s21j_w-x__1.pdf

The 4-wire version MUST have some means of feedback internally - perhaps the permanent power supply is across two wires, and the signal across the other two.

I will see if i can reverse-engineer it !

Any other input from others is welcome.

I know my friend's Laguna (I know, but she likes Renaults "because they're safe") has real-time self-levelling so it needs 2 signals, power feed and return.

I don't have any Octy A4 info but I've just looked at the Fabia and Superb CFD's Foxy but sadly they are 3 wires too.

Sorted on the wiring pinouts........I have a copy of ELSA which shows the wiring for the VW sharan ballasts as almost identical.

I just need to see how much i can find some ALZW sensors for and i'll be done!

I stumbled on a German site the other day which had them, I'll see if I can find the link.
