Ticking and Surging

Featured Replies

Couple of strange things on my 2004 VRS.

When the engines been driven a bit, nice and warm, at idle there is a ticking sound which goes when you rev it. I guess its the turbo but is it bad?

Also when putting in second gear, the car surges for a second or two before returning to normal. Why would the boost be rising on its own when I am only giving it a tiny bit of gas?

Any ideas?

ticking may also be the injectors/drivetrain. Best get it to a qualified tech to check.

At least do a Vagcom check to make sure there's no error codes (see map of people with the cable who may live nearby and can help you out here).

Ticking is more than likely the solenoid on the EVAP canister, perfectly normal.

There you go - the God of all things VAG has spoken:D

Is there anyway of me double checking that it is this?

And any ideas on the surging?

The ticking/clicking on my car sometimes get quite loud and a little embarassing :o but sometimes it doesn't happen at all.Its normal....at least on my car

The ticking should be coming from a box at the front, if you open your bonnet it's at the front on the left and if you touch if you can feel it clicking/ticking away.

It's normal, but also annoying as it makes the car sound slightly like a diesel with the standard exhaust.

Mine surges too, so if you find out why let me know ;)

Yep mine's been surging in 2nd gear recently too, infact it was pretty bad yesterday when i was stuck in some traffic really annoying! any ideas?

Do you have vag-com to pull any codes up?

Is the surging a hesitation or an actual surge? as in power boost

I'm not saying i can help but someone maybe able too.;)

mine ticks and tbh now im used to it i dont hear it any more.

mine also surges but only when its cold so im not much help to you on that one

The surge is a power boost, as the car is acelerating on its own for a second, its bad becasue I always notice when turning into tight side streets - when I really dont want to acelerating!! Whats the valve called that controlls the boost given to the engine? I wonder if thats faulty and sending boost when it shouldn't be there:confused:

Yeah, ticking seems to be coming from that box so I will stop worrying about, or start taking it to bits to see if I can stop it.:D

The N75 valve.Could be the problem.

N75 Valve, thats what I'll start looking at next.

I let you know if it makes a difference....

Thanks for the reply, nope don't have vag-com, but im having a service this week so i will get them to check for any codes. Sounds like it could be the n75 valve reading the other posts. I shall report back if any codes are found.
