Anyone had this clutch problem?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Odd clutch problem that I've noticed recently. Dealer has had a look and says they can't find anything wrong.

Clutch is perfectly fine most of the time, but after about an hours drive (dual cariageway/motorway with the odd roundabout) it suddenly goes extremely light for about half the travel of the pedal and the bite point is waaaay down at the floor, to the extent that it can be difficult to select gears.

Over the course of the next 24 hours or so it returns to normal.

It has done this at around the same point both times I have driven from my home to my parents.

Interestingly, on the drive between here and my girlfriends (about 2 - 3 hours), it doesn't do it. That's a slower journey with more gearchanges.

Don't think it's a clutch wear/overheating problem but something else perhaps. I think I'm right in saying it's a hydraulic clutch, so could be air getting in somewhere? Fluid levels are all fine.

Do I need to take it back to the dealers?

Cheers for any advice or anyone who can shed some light on this, it's a 1.9 TDi if it matters.

I must admit that just recently i've noticed something similar on mine...... Seems to be worse when in traffic jams though and can be difficult to get into 1st at times. Once it has a bit of a run it seems to get a little better again.

Anybody any ideas???

Cheers

Dave.

Same here too, mainly noticeable in first gear...Seems you have to plant your left foot down!

Not had this particular problem, though was having some clutch judder from cold.

The car has had a brake fluid change last week and I have found that it really improves the feel of the clutch. Feels a lot stronger. Less judder from cold, gearchanges somehow better and brakes definately more bite.

Hope this helps.

I have a similar clutch problem, feels mushy in the middle, then suddenly grabs at the very top.

Been to the the official dealer far too many times, problems range from the flywheel to the clutch cylinder. Other than that I've had too many other mechanical problems so I'm selling the car; mostly because of the incompetent dealers who cannot solve anything until it's broken completely.

Yeah it's a bit mysterious really. Oh well, thought it was worth a punt to ask. Only thing is I thought the car was about to break down so joined Green Flag, looks like I needn't have bothered.

Cheers folks.
