Fog light mod

Featured Replies

I have seen on here a few times people talking about a mod whereby the rear fog lights come on with the brake lights.

Is there a similar thing you can do to make the front fog lights come on when you switch on main beam or flash your lights?

If so can someone tell me how its done?

Many thanks :)

Mark

disconnect the front foglights, take the power supplies to a relay and connect the switched terminal on the relay to the full beam switch.

You should find a suitable wiring diagram on any after market fog light fitting kits and that will include the correct relay etc too :)

That was quick. Many thanks.

Will that mean I can still use the fog lights normally (i.e. when it is foggy) with the standard switch inside the car?

just be prepared to be flashed at all the time!!:(

wouldnt be my first mod!!

k:)

He's only talking about having the fog lights come on when you flash your main beams/have your main beams on, so it shouldn't bother oncoming traffic.

Thats correct. Don't want then on all the time only with main beam.

I hate it when people run with their fog lights on all the time.

If you wire it up as I'm talking they would stop functioning as per fog lights and be wired up as per driving lights.

Eg on with main beam only.

If you can get a relay with a double input to latch the power then you could have them either on from the fog light switch or on from a second switch (eg headlight supply),

no, you can do it with a standard relay, as long as it has 5 terminals. You wire the + of the coil to the mainbean and the -ve to earth.

Then take the common of the changeover to the fog light, wire the normally closed side to the wire that used to go to the fog and the normally open to perm 12v. Then when the relay is actuated, the fog is connected to +12v and when the relay is not actuated, it's connected to the output of the fog switch.

                       /o-------- (nc) to fog switch
                      /
to fog (com)---------o/

                        o-------- (no) to +12v

                        ||}
-ve -----------------------}

Most of the ones that come in the kits I think are not 5 pin, but your way does indeed work.

Of course wiring it up both ways brings up interesting issues on legality as driving lights must only come on with full beam.

Nice solution!

have you looked on vag com? im sure there are some options of other things you can do with the fogs on there (is on mine) dunno if there be the options there for a furby?

Not sure if I'd read it wrong, but I'd assumed the lights where already in the bumper, so it was just the switching required.

True, but anyway you look at it this doesn't comply with the law. Either they're fog lights or driving lights. If they're fogs and it's not foggy (and assuming you can have main bean on I'd say it isn't) then you're in trouble, or as you say, driving lamps can only come on with main been.

I hadn't realised that legality was an issue here :D
