Ball joint?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've had a funny knocking noise for a little while which appears to only come from the O/S front of the car. It only happens when turning a sharp left at low speed (pulling on and off the driveway mainly) and feels like a jiggling coming through the steering column as the O/S wheel is shocked. My console bushes, drop links and track rod ends have all been changed and the ARB collars are ok.

It doesn't do it at all when the wheels are straight, only when turned.

Could this be the ball joint do you think?

If so does anyone know how much the new part would be? I've read that they're easy to change. :)

Cheers,

Chris.

is it lowered by any chance ?

if it is i would imagine its the roll bar touching the steering track arm when you've got the lock on

the set of Eibach springs i've fitted came with 2 alloy collars which needed to be fitted to the steering rack to restrict its movement so this touching doesn't occur

Nope, standard suspension I'm afraid. The wheel doesn't need to be fully locked either, just to do a 90 degree turn at 5mph can cause the knocking.

Wierd how it doesn't do it in a straight line though, only when turning.

:)Difficult to diagnose this sort of thing without seeing/driving the car, but as it does it only on left turns it sounds to me like a problem with the top MacPherson strut bush/bearing or maybe the steering rack.

If it were a click, click, click, click, click noise it'd most likely be an outer driveshaft joint, but you wouldn't feel that through the steering column.

cv joint?

cv joint?

:thumbup:That's the one.

Yeah, I've had a CV joint go before on a Vauxhall Cavalier ages ago. The boot had come away and the joint ended up full of grit. Click click click as I went round a roundabout.

This isn't doing that. It's like the suspension components are clanking together when the wheel is turned and I go over bumps. If the road is smooth everything is fine. It requires a combination of tight turn (left or right) and bumps to shock the wheel and you feel it.

I am experiencing the exact same with my vrs se!

So it isn't just me! Thank god I'm not alone..... :D

Sound slike either the top mount or a busted spring.

Hmm...

the car's been on a ramp a few times recently including to have the console bushes changed in the last few weeks and a busted spring's not been spotted. I wonder if it's the top mount though. How would you inspect such a thing?

Skoda will hear me if it's anything like that! Car is an 07 less thank 5k on clock.

I read once that soft engine mount(s) can cause a knocking felt through the steering column. The HonestJohn website I think. Not sure if this makes any sense?

i had this once. It turned out to be the metal brake shield which had bent the wrong way and was catching on the track control arm when turning

I think youve overtaken me now with faults :D

IME you will feel a outer CV going through the steering. Check the boots and joints.

are the plastic collars still on the roll bar ?

if not , the bar will move across , it then touches the alloy console

They are indeed. The ARB looks in really good nick too...no signs of corrosion as far as I can tell.
