Retained value of options?

Featured Replies

I'm just about to sell my Fabia vRS as I've got a new Octy vRS lined up to replace it. I've got the basic price for the car from the usual sources but was wondering what any of my factory options may be worth on the used market. The dealers I've spoken to have differing opinions on this but are agree in some places.

Car is a 55 plate in Black Magic and has the following options:

Xenons - £500 factory option - most dealers agree you'll see some of this back.

Sunroof - £450 factory option - all dealers agree I'm on my own in wanting one and thus it adds no value!

Heated seats - £150 factory option - most dealers agree you'll see some of this back.

Would anybody care to put some £ against what you reckon these are worth? Car is very clean indeed but do these options add £ as well as desirability - dealers seem to reckon add £300 for the lot?

eta: I'll be selling privately not to a dealer!

I’d guess £100-150 tops. It does make it easier to sell however.

I should add, my Octy has Xenons, Sat Nav, ESP, Multi-func wheel, TPM, Gateway 300 ipod adapter and even though the car is not even 2 years old, I expect this little lot to be worth no more than £500, possibly less.

When I had my Fabia estate, I had a few extras on it and although the car was obviously not as desireable as a VRS, I was told by a couple of dealers that you would get more if you sell it privately as dealers would not give you much over and above book price, due to profit margins I guess.......

Personally, I would say you would have a much better chance of selling it with a few options compared to the bog standard, but I would say a couple of hundred quid maybe.

Of course, someone could come along and make your day.

Honestly? Bog-all, IME. All of the cars I've had previously have had something by way of extras, but never has it made an difference come trade-in time. They might help attract some interest in a private sale, but I doubt a dealer will give you any extra money for them, I'm afraid...

At the end of the day, it comes down to whether someone who is looking to buy thinks these options add value and whether they are worth a premium. Most dealers will give you the book price (which doesn't cater for options) or a few hundred quid over book price because they know they can jack up the forecourt price because it has x, y and z.

I would say that private buyers in general are prepared to pay a bit more to get the options they want so you can advertise high and barter down (they then think they have got a good deal, but you've still got a bit extra for your options).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking to take the P with the price of the car because of the options, just realise what they're worth if anything! If the options are worth something I'd like something for them as I shelled out for them once upon a time.

I'm not PXing because it pains me to see my pride and joy go to a dealer for them to make £1-2K extra on the price they'd give me. I'd much rather see it driven away by an enthusiast to be cherished again for somewhere between PX and Forecourt price!

The only reason I'd PX was if the car was a lemon with some serious issues...

Ouch!! Maybe you'd like to sell your MFD2 when you move the car on to get some of the £1350 back? My new Octy hasn't got one..... yet....

I remember a chap trying to part/ex a W8 4.0 Passat. He’d spent nearly £40K pn it and at 2 years old I bid him around £12K. He went mental and said it was worth more, but as I had spent a couple of days ringing round to get the car underwritten and that was not only the best offer, but the only garage willing to take on the liability. He didn’t understand that he didn’t set the price for his car, the market did.

That’s the problem for us ‘optional extras’ fans, we get stung when we sell. I always buy extras purely because I want them and don’t expect to get anything back when I sell. It does help move the car on though.

I’d have a big hole in my Octy. Besides I’m still trying to find out if it has any intrinsic value, but thanks for the thought:D

An Audi dealer would attempt to sell the list options again for the book price in the used retail market

Somebody will pay extra for them if they want them, otherwise no value....

Well I'll have a nice Stream to fill the hole if you like? :)
