Which Oil?

Featured Replies

Haven't a bit of a bad experience with VW service and a dispute to which oil should be used for PD 105 TDI engines when on long life service schedules.

Can someone please confirm?

After a previous post about VW price promise I have received a written quote from an independent garage who say that Quantum 5W 40 is the correct oil but VW say that they use Castrol Long life 3 5W 30.

The independent say that if I want 5W 30 then it will be even cheaper but not sure who to believe now.

The independent with buying in bulk can do the 5W 40 for £6.50 plus VAT per litre and the 5W 30 for £5.50 plus vat per litre.

The VW service manager and brand manager both say that if I have a warranty claim to do with the engine and it has 5W 40 oil in it then it will void my warranty.

The attitude of the VW service staff was unbelievable and as soon as I mentioned the price promised I could see that he didn't want to know.

Please help with the right and wrong oil query!

Hi, I used millers xfe-pd oil in my VRS and that was 5w-40. So I'm guessing the garage was correct in there presumptions.

I've had a chance to look at the service booklet in the car and it doesn't mention anything about 5W 30 or anything like that but my understanding is that the warranty will be fine as long as the oil meets 507.00 specs then it should be fine.

Just want to make sure that the service indicator doesn't come on early because the wrong oil has been used.

Still not convinced what is right. Anyone else?

Was your VRS on longlife or standard PD fully syntheyic oil for fixed (10,000 mile/yearly servicing)?

Millers do a 507.00/504 oil, it has replaced the 506.1 version

The XFE-PD isn't long life, but the XF LONG LIFE 5w30 I mention is.

You can get a 5L bottle for about £32-£36

Not really looking at supplying the oil myself but have to know that the dealer suppying and doiung the oiul change is doing it with the correct stuff.

Am I right in thinking that the dealer was wrong in saying that if I used 5W 40 instead of the 5W 30 that they said that my warranty would be void? I thought that as long as the oil was to 507.00 then the warranty would be intact.
